I am on the happy pills!!

I have been having a few problems recently with my back and the back of my heal. i went to the doctors a couple of weeks ago after i got stuck on the bed literally i was lying there talking to my DD and when i went to get up i couldn't move i was totally stuck. i went to the doctors and he sent me for some blood tests one was to test for rheumatoid arthritus. luckily they came back negative. I went to see him again last night and he said he thought it would help if i had a weeks supply of diazepam i refused at first and he said he hated prescribing them but it would relax the muscles in my spine and stop them goin into spasms so reluctantly i have agreed. Has anyone else ever had them for this reason if so did you have any side affects? sorry to waffle on but i am a little worried about taking them.

my husband has a bad back and has recently taken diazapan for it and it has really helped him. his back goes into spasms and he can hardly move, the diazapan just relaxes him and his back. he has never had any problems from taking it, when he was first prescribed it we were quite unsure about using it also but really it was fine and does help

Thanks for that. I haven't really got anything to lose by giving them ago except hopefully a painfull back

Diazepam is more to do with relaxation than being, typically, a 'happy pill'

If it makes you feel better it's definitely a 'go for it' situation

Thats what he called it when he mentioned it to me and why i said no to start with. I have taken 3 so far and my head feels a little woozy but nothing i can't cope with

its the long tearm efrects you will have to watch,as vallium is an additive drug,as are all morphine based drugs

I have only got 7 days supply and that will be it, i will not agree to have a second course, i told the doctor that. I have no intentions of getting addicted to this stuff no matter what he says.

Sorry to hear about your back, i totally understand as earlier this year i was suffering with a bad back. l'd had the problem on and off for some time but after attending a relaxation day and having a head massage of all things my back totally froze. As l work at a hospital l went down to A&E, l was given diazepam 5mg & 3mg. These help to relax the muscles in your back. l was told not to drive and that they would make me very sleepy. The 5mg were for at night as obviously they are a higher dose. They did make me sleepy but the rest was exactly what l needed. Since then (touching wood) my back has been great, l get the odd twinge but nothing like l used to. l think if you were prescribed these drugs long term they could become addictive but l really don't think you'll have a problem with a 7 day course

I have taken diazapam this year for my ongoing back problem- though I am getting better each day after 18 months of it! I didn't have any side affects, and to be honest i never really noticed any difference, but then again i have been on a cocktail of drugs!!
take them for the prescribed 7 days, and try not to do anything strenuous, just take it easy!

Do you trust your GP enough to know he/she is not going to prescribe you something over a duration where it is likely you will become addicted? That's probably the real question here.

Edited to add: In the event that we do think you'll be on something potentially addictive for a significant period of time where this might be an issue we discuss this with a patient first so that they can make the decision for themselves as to whether they wish to start such a treatment. Getting you addicted to something is not great for you ... and it just creates more unnecessary work for us too!!!
