...giraffe! Actually he is 6'1" and was hand carved and painted in Kenya. He is really beautiful and now is in our front entry hall.
I have wanted this from a local shop for quite some time but he was a bit pricey ($1500
). Well there he sat for over a year. The proprietor said one day he would be mine. There were two other pieces in the shop my husband and I were also interested in. The piece DH loved was another Kenyan wood carving of a mother and child beautifully framed in a shadow box which had a price sticker for $675.
I noticed when I was in the shop last week that the mother and child was down to $475. The proprietor said he wanted to sell it and remembered my husband's interest in the piece. When I brought my DH back to the shop that night to buy the mother and child piece, the shop was closed. We saw in the window another piece that we liked, a batik painted in Africa in a simple black frame. We later found out that this piece was priced at $165.
Well, I thought on it a while, and decided to go into the shop and offer $600 for the mother and child and batik. While my mouth was forming the words for that offer, I instead asked what type of price would the proprietor accept for the mother and child, the batik, and before I knew what I was saying "for my friend here"? gesturing towards the giraffe.
After some number crunching, he came up with the price $1400. Wow. DH was actually out of town for the weekend and while it would have been a bit of a stretch to spend the $600 for the mother and child and batik, at least I could have given them as a gift to DH since he really wanted the mother and child. What to do, what to do. Called DH who was visiting his parents in NY and laid it out for him. I told him I thought of countering for $1200 but what did he think of the idea of parting with that much cash? (Usually he is not crazy about parting with cash!). DH took some time to think it over and called me back to say that he knew I had been wanting the giraffe for a long time and if I thought it was a good idea I should go for it.
So now...I am the proud owner of a six foot giraffe.
BTW, I named him Titus after the proprietor of the shop. DS has already adorned his head with a baseball cap...backwards of course
. I guess it was only a matter of time.
