I'm not kidding--I'm having a bit of a melt-down. My son has joined the Marines and will have his boot camp (graduating September 14th) at Camp Pendleton in San Diego--an hour or so away from Disneyland. Not letting a chance like that slip by, I sent in a reservation request to Dreams. I just got it back, and sent in my deposit.

Then it hits me--this will be our last family trip.

This will be the last time we have a trip and come home together as our little family of four. Our daughter is 21, and is in college. It will be her senior year, and she has already cleared it. So our little family of four--whose best family times on earth have been at WDW--are going to make our last trip together. I'm channeling Teresa. I've always been an emotional, sentimental guy, so this is really hard. We have always traveled a lot--big summer vacations every year. We are campers, and my son's first trip was to California (Yosemite/Sequoia) when he was three months old. But our (5) Disney trips were special: the kids could just go and swim, we ate at restaurants, didn't have to hide our food in the car from bears, and we had indoor plumbing--little things like that add up quick. My favorite memory of our son is on Thunder Mountain Railroad when he was six--screaming and hollering, with a smile as big as Texas. We have never been the type of parents who look forward to the end of summer--we have such good times with our children. I know there will be more great times together, but as a little family of four, this it it. My family has grown up, and they are leaving the nest. And, it makes me very sad inside. :sad1:

Have the best time ever! And thank your son for me for his future service to our country. You must be very proud of both of your kids.

Don't get too sad...I'm 37 and my whole family (parents, kids, and grandkids) went to Colorado this summer and are talking about a WDW trip in 2013. Maybe we're a little abnormal, but we all love being together. So there's hope! :)

:hug:We have a little family of 4 also, and DS is in college. DD is in high school and I can see the "end" on the horizon. Have to find new ways to vacation-until the grandkids come along anyway!

Hopefully you'll have many more vacations together...maybe even with grandchildren one day. However it all works out will become the new normal fast enough.

Ah, yes...empty nesters. My own experience is that the first couple of years are really hard, then something magic happened and DH and I rediscovered each other as a couple. We started enjoying our WDW trips with just the 2 of us, a whole new way to vacation. :goodvibes

We also are very excited and really looking forward to both of our kids, and all of our grandkids joining us next February for a huge family gathering.

It's a definite change, but we've embraced it and made the most of our 'couple' time. And then at other times we love having the whole family with us. Best of both worlds.

aaw! how bittersweet!

well, next time you have a family trip, you can stay at shades of green! and get all those military discounts.

ps, thank your son for his service..

Since my son will be a Marine, we got one at the Disneyland Hotel--I didn't say having him in the military was all bad ;)

And thanks to those who expressed appreciation for his upcoming service. He's a good guy--we have had so many laughs, and I am very proud of him. Oh, oh....I'm going Teresa again....

Enjoy your trip. You will have more. When you say Disney World, believe me they will come running. Now you can plan for the grand kids trips. I am taking my only granddaughter in May. BBB, Character meals, special dresses. I can't wait.

I sympathize; My ds 19 left for Navy in August. I look at the bright side: hopefully in 10 years you will have grand kids! A whole new crop of kids to take to Disney! I know I dream of this!
