I-77 nightmare!

We drive to Orlando 2x a year from Ottawa and have used several variations of the !-81 to I-95. There are several small changes that we make depending on the time of day we travel.

This trip, we were lucky enough to get a studio at HHI for 5 nights but it was the same week that my daughter was on another trip. We arranged to pick her up at the airport in Toronto this morning. We plugged in the GPS and off we went.

The I-77 was a disaster. Not only do you have to pay a toll to use part of it, it was bumper to bumper for over an hour. Then it was reduced to one lane for construction - another 30 minutes. Oh and did I mention that another 45 minutes was lost due to a truck blowing a tire?

Never again. Although the Peace Bridge was simple to navigate and quick.

Sorry you have a rough drive. What time of day were you on I77? We should hit Beckley around 2 or 3 PM.

Where was the construction? Around the tunnels? We leave for WDW in four weeks today and we're planning on taking I79/77.

I don't mind the toll. As I remember the I90 toll was more money.

We hit Beckley at about 4pm. You're right about the I90 toll, it was $3 but it was clear sailing so we don't mind that one. The construction was around the tunnels. I love the idea of the tunnels instead of the roads going up and down the mountains. I was so looking forward to a different drive but it was not fun.

Sorry you didn't have a good experience. I think at this time of year, you can hit construction and slowdowns regardless of which highway you drive. I can see where it would be a problem around the tunnels.

We travel down I-77 about 10 times a year. We've hit a few little things here and there but nothing that we haven't hit anywhere else. I think traffic is traffic wherever you may be. We usually get from Toronto to HHI in about 16 hours. The tolls total to $4.50. It is unfortunate that you hit some bad stuff but I think you were probably just unlucky.

we are going to Clearwater area for Christmas. We're in the Ottawa area. We were thinking of flying but driving would be cheaper. Hubby just doesnt like the idea of driving I81,83 - 95 in the wintertime. He doesnt want to go over the mountains in Pennsylvania in the wintertime. Any other ideas from people that drive down in the winter would be appreciated.

Good day,

It would be a bit longer, by estimates probably 4 hours in total. BUT, you avoid the mountains in winter.

My DW and I have gone this route a few times. It's not too bad, mind you we also stop off near ATL to see my son, either going down or coming back.

HTH.

We drive it in Feb/March every year. Key is to go through the mountains in daylight. Although, once you get past the snow, the snow tires make driving a pain.
