Hi everyone!!

This will be the first time our family drives from MI to WDW down I-75. We are planning a stop in Knoxville on our way back from the world and we have no clue where to stay in the area (and where to stay AWAY from, if you know what I mean  ). If anyone has experience driving this route and staying in this area, I'd really appreciate your input. Thanks!!

Hi Local Girl,

We live in Knoxville so here is my recommendation to you. If you want to avoid the rush hour traffic in the morning (which usually includes construction work backups), you should stay at one of the hotels at the Merchant's Road Exit (off I-75, on the northside of Knoxville). There are about 10 different hotels (Comfort Inn, Sleep Inn, Hampton Inn, Econo Lodge, etc,), and a wide variety of restaurants. If you need to stop before going all the way through Knoxville, try one of the hotels at the Cedar Bluff exit (Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Select, Signature Inn, Courtyard by Marriott, Sleep Inn, La Quinta, etc.) both are safe areas.
You can email me if you have any questions.

If you want a place where you can get on and off the interstate quickly and have plenty of food choices, I'd choose the Holiday Inn or Hampton Inn at Cedar Bluff Road. There's also a a New Sleep Inn off Cedar Bluff Road if you want to save some money.

You could go past Knoxville completely and stay at the Inn of Lenoir at the Lenoir City exit.

Knoxville weekday traffic is a NIGHTMARE from 6:30 to 8:00am and from 4:00 to 6:00pm.

The new state flower for Tennessee is the Orangeous Contstructionia Barrelous ;)

Another Knoxvillian voting for Cedar Bluff exit. There are lots of restaurants in that area and several hotels. The hotels on Parkside Drive are all relatively new.

Some choices include:
Candlewood Suites on Parkside Drive
Microtel Inn on North Peters
Residence Inn by Marriot off Cedar Bluff
Courtyard off Cedar Bluff

As a tip: North Peters and Parkside Drive are the same road. North Peters becomes Parkside as you continue west from Cedar Bluff.

It's true the traffic during morning or evening rush is bad but at least it gives us something to complain about.

Thank you all for your advice--you've been very helpful! We will actually be staying over on a Sat. night and leaving first thing Sun. morning. I'm glad we'll miss that rush hour traffic!

WAIT! When are you going? Make sure the University of TN does not have a home football game. Hotels get much fuller and charge more (although the way the team is playing things could be different!) The remaining home games are 11/9 and 11/30.

Thanks for posting that info CarolA. I didn't even think of that possibility! Fortunately, if 11/30 is the final home game, we'll miss it by a week--we are planning on driving home 12/7.
