I will be taking the i 75 route this summer. I understand that canadians can not use there credit cards at the pumps anymore. You have to go in and they will charge your card first then you can pump. I plan on using cash to buy my gas. Will I have to go in first and pay them then go back out and pump my gas. Or can i pump first then go and pay??

One more thing. On the i 75 do you actually have to take an exit to get gas or do the have service centres right along the highway like in ontario here on the 401??

thanks

Unless things have changed it depends on the gas station. If they require a zip code then you can not pay at the pump, however if they don't then you should be able to pay at the pump.

On Interstate 75 they have exits so it's nothing like the 401 and in my opinion Interstate 75 is better that way, because it's not long until the next compared to the service centres along the 401. Even the exits on the 401 where they have gas stations are more far apart, depending on the city your driving threw.

What about paying with cash?? Will i have to go in first and pay, or can i pump first then pay??

Again I think it depends on the gas station. Some of them you can just select the grade of gas you will need and when your done you can go inside to pay. Then there are others where you need to pre pay for gas, however you won't know how things are done until you see the rules at the pump.

You may want to pick up a copy of along the I-75. It tells you the exits for gas stations, rest stops, hotels, restaurants etc. We never travel without it.

I think I understand. Each station will have rules listed at the pump. So if you have to pay first, say you pay the guy $45 then you go pump, and can only get $37 in your tank. Then i guess you have to go back in and get change. This sure seem like a crazy set up.

If you pre-pay at then whatever amount you give them will be connected to the pump. So if you want to purchase $20.00 in gas, the pump will stop when it get's to $20.00 and will not go over that amount.

I understand that. But i am saying If while pumping your $20 your tank is full at $18.50. Then you have to go back in i guess. It makes it hard to fill your tank, I guess you have to guess how much it will take.

Oh I see what your saying. Also you basically got it right that when pre paying you have to guess how much gas you need, so maybe it's best to find stations where you don't need to pre pay.

It will depend on the chain and the state and also the time you are stopping. Flying J in the US all along I75 requires you to pay first then if you pay to much they refund you the difference. There are now quite afew stations requiring this with the driveoff problems in the US from people not wanting to pay for their gas @ 3+ dollars a gallon.

Wow, when did this start? I have always used my canadian credit card (Amex) to charge all of my gas on my trips to Fla. on the I75 and never had to pre-pay at all?

Some gas stations have been making guests pre pay for gas, so you just won't know what station does it until you see the pump. You can still use your Canadian credit card when paying inside, so there should be no problems with that.

I just wanted to add that every place we stopped when driving down (both last year and the year before) required you to prepay for gas. So I think it is far more common than not having to prepay.

ETA: We always use cash to pay for gas (or traveller's cheques) so I don't know anything about the credit card issue.

Use this link to view what stations will and will not allow you to use your CDN credit card.

Foreverdance we are the same way we only use TC's or cash for all our gas purchaces we seldome use our CC while on holidays other than on our cruise but that is pretty much it we oly use TC's while at Disney or shopping in the Disney area.

Us too. Almost never use CC on our trip. We have all our spending money ready to go in TC and use that... easier to control spending if you actually have to look at what you are paying instead of just handing over the tiny little piece of plastic.

Also wanted to add that although some US gas stations can't accept Canadian CC's for pay-at-the-pump because of having no zip code, that doesn't mean you can't pay with your cc inside the store. Just some companies have their pumps set up that way. Pre-paying for gas isn't a uniquely American thing. There are plenty of gas stations in Canada that require you to pre-pay for gas, especially from dusk to dawn.

There are plenty of places to do a quick exit along I-75 for gas. They do have rest areas with vending machines and restrooms right off the highway, but they don't have gas stations with them like here. The rest areas/Welcome centres are a great place to pick up discount hotel coupons for each state.

The only suggestion I would pass along is to make sure you fill up on gas before heading into the Kentucky/Tennessee hills/mountainous areas (between Corbin, KY and Knoxville, TN) because there aren't as many places to stop for gas along that stretch of road.

I loved driving down to Disney and can't wait for our next trip. Have fun!
