Hurricane Wilma and step dad-

Well, my mom and step dad just got down to Venice, Florida. It is close to ?Ft. Meyers where the Wilma is possibly going to be. I don't like my step dad but I am always nice to him and never argue because he thinks he is always right. My mother is like a mouse sometimes and takes whatever he puts out. Anyway, I called down to Venice this morning and talked to my step dad about getting out of Venice as soon as possible. He told me that I did not understand Florida and he knew best and would not leave until they told him to. He said all the traffic going north is because of accidents and they slow traffic . It is his car he says and my mom can't drive it. So she is basically at his mercy, so she says. I asked her to call the airport and get herself a flight home, she tried and was unable to. Then I told her that my husband and I would pay for her hotel if that was the concern. Anyway, I told my step dad that I would never forgive him for being this way if anything happened to my mom. My husband thought it was a little to harsh and he might get mad. Anyone have an opinion? I am up in Michigan and am watching the hurricane and it is slowing down a little but I am still worried. Anyone still down there and not leaving? Also they only have a tiny trailer with only l bedroom, not too safe. Am I overreacting?

I don't think they should ride out a storm in a trailer. They should go to a local shelter, or stay with someone in a more stable place. But, if they won't leave, they won't leave. My parents are like this. My dad will never leave during a hurricane, and my mom won't go anywhere without him. What can you do? Just try not to worry. At least no they are saying Wilma is likely to lose some strength on it's way to FL. Hopefully they are right.

They shouldn't try it in a trailer. I agree with you, and your not over reacting.

Look online and find the locations of a couple shelters near them, and Mapquest directions to them.

And if they are still there are Wilma approaches, call the local police, tell them your mother is there with her husband who refuses to leave, and she wants to go to a shelter but has no way to get there, and ask them to intervene.

A mobile home or trailer is NOT a safe place to be in a storm.

Thanks, I feel better now. It is losing some strength but I hope they don't think they can ride it out there. Nobody is left in the park they are in now. Great idea about calling police and some intervention if necessary. Thanks again.

From my understanding of it, any mobile home/trailer would be an automatic evac in any hurricane. I'd be pretty concerned as well---sounds like much deeper issues than just the storm though, so I hope things work out for your mom & you. Doesn't sound like a good situation at all.

As of 10/21 the following counties have issued evacuation orders for barrier islands, low lying areas, mobile homes and RVs
Monroe, Collier, Hendry, Martin, St Lucie, and Okeechobee
I believe they are voluntary at this point. If I lived in a mobile home I would leave now and not later so not to be trapped later. Right now we are being told that this storm should be closely monitored but will probably not hit until Monday or Tuesday. Of course things can change at anytime.

ITA with Ducklite's recommendation. A trailer is no place to ride out a hurricane! Please let us know what happens!
