This is a list of general hurricane related help. Once Rita makes landfall, or gets closer, I'll have more area specific local resources listed.

FEMA To apply for federal disaster assistance by phone you can call 1-800-621-3362 (FEMA)

IF YOU ARE MISSING A LOVED ONE the Salvation Army can help locate your loved ones. Their web site has been innundated, please keep hitting "refresh" until you get through. You can also call the American Red Cross, 866.438.4636.

If you left the affected area and went to Dallas with a pet but can't keep it with you, Metroplex Animal Hosp. on 183 by the Cowboy stadium is offering kennel space for free!

CNN.com has a special area on their web site where people can post that they are OK. If you are looking for someone, look to see if they are OK. If you are in any of the affected areas and someone might be worried for you, take a moment to send an e-mail to let everyone know you're OK!

List of housing available for people displaced by HUrricanes Open Your Home another list. (Please use common sense when opening your home or accepting a housing invitation!)

Please donate BLOOD Call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (1-800-448-3543) to find a donation center near you. The need is CRITICAL!

The dad of the girls who started project backpack has contacted me since donating to the program.
http://www.projectbackpack.org/

He's asked me to please spread the word about the need for call takers nationwide. By going to the project800 website you can learn more and possibly help those affected by the hurricane(s).

Please spread the word to any other boards you might visit, all help is appreciated!

well thats a very good post
thanks for all the useful info
it may help so many people
who are in the dead and the injured list, everyone will come to know
i am grieved at the loss of lives of the people

it was really sad what Hurricane Katrina did to New Orleans it made me cry but at the same time the littlest of mad cause that is my name but i put that aside and did what i could to help

Wow, is this the worst hurrican yet?
I have donated much and i was going to go to flordia when it came but our trip got cancled because aunt died, luck?

I feel so bad and i love that extreme makeover home edition builds houses for people in this area.

I cudnt believe it when I had heard what had happened ! We were about to go to Disney World a few months before. Its scary thinkin that cud have been us. I feel so bad about what happened. Fortunately people are helping but they are still not doing enough to get homes back :guilty:

i remember when katrina went through, i live in the keys but we got effected there, there wasnt any structural damage because my house is basicly a big concrete block but there were strong humid winds, i had to mop up like 20 gallons of water coming through the doors. And a couple of months ago i went to biloxi, it was sad, we drove right along the coast and just about everything next to the ocean was comepletely destroyed, and there was a boat still lying on shore.

No offense to anyone, but does this entire "Katrina/Rita" section still need to be here?

I live in Louisiana, and the help information is pretty dated. Yes, it was great at the time, (and appreciated) but it's been a long time.

New Orleans still has much to do to recover, but if you're a tourist, if you didn't know there'd been a hurricane, you'd probably never know the difference. Downtown, the Garden District, and the French Quarter are all back exactly as they've always been. Bourbon Street seems the same as it was in 1984. Things like this make potential tourists avoid the city because they think they'll be visiting destruction. It's ultimately bad for the city.

So, I guess my point is this: these boards are about Disney. Immediately following the storms, it was a helpful source for DISers. This falls under the community section, but it's seen almost no activity since the year following the storms.

I vote to eliminate the whole section.
