Hurricane: Prayers, PD, & Good Thoughts to MD, NJ, NY, VA, SC, & NC DISers

The eye upon us now....lots of strong wind and heavy rain. Good luck to everyone north of here.

They just upgraded my part of Nova Scotia to a Tropical Storm warning. Looks like we'll get 100 km/hr winds (sorry, you folks will have to do the math on that one for miles/hr). Storm surge is going to be a big problem here in places as it's supposed to hit right at high tide. We're pretty used to tropical storms here but after Hurricane Juan did so much damage to Halifax a few years ago everyone takes them more seriously now. If it changes course even a little it will come right up the Bay of Fundy and the Annapolis Valley and I'll be less then amused....

Ummmm......you want me to do math???? :lmao:

If it's hard to get hold of water in your area, you can also just try filling up whatever pitchers or other containers in your house that can hold water. Also fill up the bathtub when it gets close to storm time - the bathtub water can be good for flushing the toilet when there's no water flow available, or it can be used for other cleaning or washing up.

You'll also want to make sure you have cash on hand before the ATMs lose power. I don't carry cash much anymore and I know a lot of others survive on credit cards too - none of that works for a while as they restore power to your area, and cash becomes the only currency that works.

I'm keeping everyone in the path of Irene in thoughts and prayers, and I hope it ends up being far less damaging than they expect! Hopefully everyone will be able to let us know you're okay after the storm passes...as long as technology cooperates, of course. :grouphug:

This! :thumbsup2 I work for a company that manages apartments all over the US, and we have been telling people to fill the bathtubs , sinks, pitchers, if it holds water put some in there. I'm hoping and praying everyone still going through the storm, or have it bearing down upon them, are safe and well!:goodvibes

Went out to walk the dogs a bit ago and it's solidly raining out there right now.

I was surprised - I saw more people out later in the day than I did this morning. A couple of restaurants on the major road down the block are open. Most of them closed up.

This is what our local pizza place looked like when we walked by.

I'm not sure this is the case in NJ. I could be naive here, but I know they were discussing this on the radio last night. Several people said that they couldn't force you out. Not sure...

Just heard that Laurence Harbor, Belmar, and parts of NYC are now being evacuated...

The can't force you to leave but I remember when I was in the volunteer fire dept. and we had either H. Erin or H. Opal heading directly towards NW FL when there were mandatory evacuations we would go around with a "Next of Kin" form for people to fill out if they decided to stay. Once winds hit a certain speed emergency vehicles are not permitted to be on the streets so if you were to call 911 there would be nothing they could do after a certain time.

:scared1: Great. Headed directly to me!

I've heard conflicting advice. Do we crack the windows open or not??

No! Like a PP said it is an old wive's tale and is not the smartest thing to do. Putting tape (masking tape or duct tape) also isn't a good thing to do, it just makes the glass fly in larger chunks and is a pain to get off.

Hope everyone stays safe.

Really? Wow, our local ShopRite had tape X's all over their front windows this afternoon. Newbie mistake I guess.

Major prayers needed for NJ.

Roof of a Long Branch apt building torn off.

Fires in Seaside. The ocean is on the boardwalk.

No power in most areas.

Massive flooding in much of Central and Northern.

There's also a rumor that Kingda Ka in Six Flags was struck by lightning and destroyed.

Round 2 is just beginning. We already had green lightning here. I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

Don't know if you get this Nikki but stay safe. I am sure you have a "safe room" where you can hunker down. Weather channel reports "only 90,000" in NJ without power. Could be something simple and not catastrophic. It will be a while but you will get through it.

Been through many of these and rumors run rampant right now. Most of them prove to be false.

Think of the stories you will have to tell. Again, stay safe.

Rain is picking up here in MA! Just had 3-4 power surges so just waiting to lose power. Winds haven't kicked in yet and that is my biggest fear! The downpours are crazy!

Got my books, flashlight and water right next to me now! I won't be sleeping much more tonight if at all! Hoepfully we won't lose power. Some in our town lost it late last night, think a transformer blew as we heard a loud boom! Everything that needs to be charged is charged so I think we will be ok!

Go AWAY IRENE!!!!!!

Hope everyone is staying safe. The winds have kicked up having a hard time staying asleep...drinking proseco and dising while we still have power..it went out for a minute at 3am...so far so good..sending pixie dust to all. pretty please with a cherry on top everyone stay safe..it will be monday before you know it. :cloud9: who ever thought I would want it to be monday so badly

Just like to wish my east cost American DISers good luck and be safe

Thinking about all of you on the East Coast and sending prayers and pixie dust!

Say a prayer that we don't lose power. The sump pump has been working since around 4 am and if the power goes out we are sunk. So far we have heavy rain and some winds. The worst for us is supposed to be up to 10 am.
