Hurricane Joaquin bearing down on the Bahamas, what does DCL do?

I'm asking for friend sailing tomorrow, he's a bit nervous because his youngest daughter doesn't do well with lots of motion. He has also dropped a lot of his hard earned money on a stay at the Poly after the cruise, which he doesn't want to be late, or lose a day on either. They're on the Dream leaving tomorrow. Since every cruise is a lot of money that DCL could lose if cancelled, I assume DCL goes regardless, but may simply not dock at either Nassau and/or Castaway Cay. What has DCL done in the past? I would assume, they keep the asset (the billion dollar ship) far from hazard, hence, they might have a 3 night at sea voyage. Thoughts...past experiences with Hurricruises...

IF the ship is in the path of a weather problem, the captain will alter course to miss it. Yes, it's possible that port stops may be cancelled, or switched.

Really hard to tell what is going to happen. As PrincessShmoo said they could change ports, cancel them, or even dock perfect fine. The Captain will be the final decider.

Your friend should be fine. As of now Joaquin is heading north, to the Northeast. The Dream will likely sail south and depending on the seas they may change ports, like Key West and then maybe back up behind the storm to CC. This is guessing that CC will not have major or any damage form the winds.

Hope they have a great time......AKK

Key West instead of Nassau, could DCL just do that every cruise :)

They have often changed ports in storm situations. With the Dream the problem may be more a matter of size, as the Dream would be just about at the maximum size able to get into Key West.

As to every cruise, read the contracts of any cruise line, they can do just about anything they want.

As your friend is sailing Thursday, if there are any Port changes he should hear about them today or 1st thing in the morning.

I just got off Fanstsy Saturday, they were doing the Eastern now, and if we were on it where we where last week, we would be feeling this storm. As it was we saw lighting every single night as it was.....so not sure what is happening

Cruising tomorrow on the Dream. Should be interesting!!! Key West would be awesome.....

I definitely could be wrong, and I am sure anything can happen, but I don't think there is a great likelihood of the ship coming in a whole day late so the stay at hotel should probably most likely try not to worry about it and it will be ok for them :)

On one cruise several years ago, the Magic changed ports and did CC first then Nassau when a storm was coming up from the south.

I get really scared around storms, even on land. Does anyone know what happens if lightning hits the ship as that is a fear of mine?

Thank you from a nervous traveller

Tell your friend this is probably a good change all excursions at CC will be cancelled. Any time a system has been out in the water like this it has happened to us. It didn't even have to be a TS or Hurricane it could just be a storm system. I still have not gotten to do the sting ray adventure due to storms and we go during different times.

Don't worry about lightning. If it hits the ship it will go through it to the water and you may not even know. There may be a loud noise and some damage at the point of contact. I'd be more concerned about the rocky seas if you get seasick.

I have good friends on the Eastern Fantasy now. CC would be Friday. Nervous for them.
No need to be nervous, this past week they kept us up on how far away all the weather systems were, there is no way one would be in danger of any sorts.

Right now it looks as if the storm will be right near by CC on Friday, so they may not make the day there, maybe a day at sea.

JLM is correct, no need to worry, they can stay south nearer Cuba, it may not be perfect weather, but not near the storm.

Curious..:confused3only sailed once on Dream, but in regard to weather pending like this one in Bahamas, if ship still goes, if you have travel insurance, am I correct that MOST travel insurance companies do NOT give you the right to cancel if the cruise line decides to go? If flight was totally cancelled due to hurricane situations into Orlando, I would guess that the cancellation provision for the entire trip would then go into effect?:confused3 TIA!:goodvibes
