what happens if while we are at por and damage is done to our rental car
"IF" the hurricane comes our way, are we responsible (we are using alamo)?

Nowadays, in most cases, you are responsible. Check the terms and conditions or rules or policies of the rental company.

Some cars, including National and Alamo, can be returned on site and you can do this just before the hurricane if you choose.

This is one of the reasons we are considering the "extra" insurance. We got such a great rate, that even 10 bucks for 15 days will not make that much of a difference - PLUS - we won't have to touch our own insurance.

I am not sure even with the extra insurance you are covered in the event of a hurricane. I know Hertz changed their policy on this during the year and so did some of the other agencies.

Hmmmm - good to know, we may have to take a closer look at it.

I think the change is you're responsible unless you buy the waivers. I just checked the Hertz website and the only restrictions on the waivers is if the damage is a result of a prohibited use of the car.

Hurricane damage, an act of god, used to absorbed by the rental agency even if you didn't buy the waiver.

Not only would you be responsible for the damages but for lost revenue to the rental agency for the time the car can not be rented. I typically never buy the extra insurance but this week I am buying the waiver. Your home auto insurance may pay but I carry a big deductable to keep my costs down at home. Check your CC for insurance but read that carefully. Most CC coverage is only excess coverage on top of your home auto policy. Many CC now do not cover autos with a replacement value over 50k.

Anyone have any idea about National? I have searched and searched their site and cannot find any restriction with their LDW insurance (the biggest one) except if something happens to the car as a result of prohibited use (racing etc..) The more I think about it - the 160 for the extra insurance is a small price to pay compared to what we could be paying!
