- We are staying at Huntington Beach for the first three nights of our trip, and having read a current thread re Newport v Huntington, I'm now worried that we aren't going to like it.

(We cannot change the reservation now, but need to manage expectations!)

When we first looked at the beaches near LA, I read so many opinions that seemed to prefer Huntington over Newport but now I'm seeing the opposite - we will be at the Hyatt Regency. (There aren't any children in the party - just 4 adults).

Has anyone recently visited Huntington Beach? What did you think?

Thank you!

Don't worry about it. Newport is nice, Huntington is nice too -- there are no bad choices here. The Hyatt is very nice. You are across the street from one of the country's nicest wide stretches of sand. One thing I like better about HB is the unobstructed beach views and access -- there are no condos or hotels on the beach side of Pacific Coast Highway.

Downtown HB is a shortish walk away with restaurants and shops. There's a farmer's market Friday mornings at the base of the pier and a street fair every Tuesday evening that takes over downtown with booths, food, entertainment, etc. A nice laid-back Surf City vibe.

Visiting Newport is a short 15-minute hop if you have a car. Fashion Island for high-end shopping, Balboa, etc.

Best of luck on your trip,

Thank you both very much :)! I'm no longer worried :)

We have stayed at the Hyatt in Huntington Beach several times. The pool areas are very good plus as PP said the beach and ocean are across the street.
If you haven't checked it out yet, there is a website www.surfcityusa.com that will give you some info on restaurants.
We usually walked to Main St./Pier for a big breakfast and just got munchies at the hotel for lunch. Then we walked back to Main St./Pier for dinner
We just relaxed at the resort and didn't go off to explore on our stays. (except for 1day on our 1st trip.We went to DTD at DL to check it out one morning, we were back at HB by 2:00)

I absolutely love Huntington Beach the most! Even over Newport. I love all the action by the pier. Surfing, volleyball, the "Strand" where everyone is biking, walking, skating, whatever...it is just fun to watch. My DH loves all the exotic cars on the Pacific Coast Highway. Be sure to have dinner at Dukes at the beginning of the pier. Up the street have breakfast at the Sugar Shack. I also love the Hyatt. That would be my first choice anytime we get down there. :thumbsup2
Do take time to visit Newport and all the gorgeous houses that line the beach. Another favorite spot to eat is Charlies at the beginning of the pier. Keep walking and you arrive at Balboa. Definitely a place to see some more beautiful homes and harbor full of some pretty nice boats. And I mean NICE!

Another beach that is close by is Laguna. More of an artsy town, but very beautiful.

You know.....it's pretty hard not to find a beautiful beach anywhere in California.

Have fun!
