I have a cousin that's graduating from high school this year. We're invited to his graduation party in June. I don't want to spend a fortune, but what do I get him? I was thinking about a gift certificate to the University's bookstore since I know he will need money for books. Is that tacky? And then..how much do you give?
Thanks for all your input.

DD16 is graduating in a few week's - she would really appreciate a gift certificate to the University's bookstore. We already spent a small fortune in the bookstore buying sweatshirts and stuff when we took our final campus tour last month. I say go for it.

Honestly, I'm sure any amount would be appreciated....I guess it depends upon how close you are to your cousin. Even $25.00 will enable him to get a school t-shirt. That would be nice!

It may sound impersonal however when I graduated from high school cash was my favorite gift! My dad sent me and my best friend to Disneyland ( first trip with no adults! ) and the cash came in very handy!

I think a gift certificate to the university's bookstore is a great idea. I know my son would use something like that. When he graduated high school and we were invited to so many parties that I couldn't possibly give cash to all of them, I decided to give each of them that were going away to school some towels. Kohl's was always having a sale on them and it is something that they will need to purchase anyhow.

Flash drives, fast food gift cards, Wal Mart or Target gift cards if there is one of those in the town where they are going to school at are just a few more ideas. Then again cash is always good also.

DD got a few gift certificates from the university book store for her first year at college. The only problem with them was the books were more expensive at the university's book store than elsewhere. Now she either rents her books from an online store or buys used at an online store. She is paying half of what she paid before on books.

As others have suggested, cash is good (although DD's university does not accept cash for laundry machines in the dorms) or a Walmart/Target gift certificate.

Perhaps an underbed storage container with a few towels, extra long sheets (most college dorms use this size), or misc other items your nephew may use. Maybe a plastic bowl plate, and mug; paper items like plates, paper towels, plastic silverware, or cups come in handy also. Power strips are always useful.

Spend what you are comfortable with.
