How'd they do that? (couple pics)

Hi y'all!

My mom and I went to a craft fair this morning, and we found the most BEAUTIFUL glassware, (someone bought the peach piece that I really wanted before I could, darnit!) and we're hoping to find out how it's done. The (rather snippy) lady behind the table informed us that she does not "give out" her recipe for making this glassware, but she did mention that she used rice paper, which is foreign to me.

Here's the inside of the bowl; it's still somewhat transparent although you can't tell from the picture:

And here's the outside; basically it looks like they used a regular bowl and placed dried flowers then used some kind of glue-like concoction to "paste" the flowers and "rice paper" to the bowl. It's quite bumpy and ridged on the outside, and can't be soaked or put in the dishwasher:

If anyone can give me some insight as to how these are made, my mom has a whole bunch of glassware that just sits around gathering dust, and she'd love to know how to make these as a hobby

Thanks in advance!

I'm not crafty myself, but you could probably take the bowl to a local craft store and they could tell you. There is some sort of glue called "modge podge (sp)" that sounds like what they used.

I've done something similar with tissue paper and decoupage glue on votive candle holders to make them look like stained glass. Go to a craft store and find some decoupage glue. The instructions will be on the bottle. Very simple to do. I am about as un-artistic & un-creative as you can get and I was able to make some pretty nice candle holders.

I agree. Use Modge Podge which you can find at the craft store. You line a bowl with plastic wrap to make it easy to get out. Then start pasting down the rice paper. When you get several layers then you could put your dried flowers in and paste then down, then apply several more layers of rice paper.

Hmm, I wonder where I could find rice paper... I looked at it online but I was hoping I might find some in a store 'round here. I went to Michael's and the response I got was :confused3

Maybe I'll try JoAnn Fabrics...

Thanks for the help y'all! :thumbsup2

Try looking for mulberry rice paper also, mulberry paper usually have those type of threads and the rice paper makes it more translucent. You can also find beautiful handmade paper that have patterns and glitter mica as well or translucent vellum (which is stiffer but easier to work with/doesn't tear as easy if you're wrapping something simple). You might find some good stuff in the scrapbook section but the local places by me don't usually have what I like, so I get mine online :D

Very interesting! I have a candle holder that was made in a similar fashion and I always wondered how they make these things. :confused3 Sorry that I can't be of any help with the mystery though!
