carry-on? checked in bags?
DS wants to bring his for his downtime

Oof... that's a toughie.

Since it's valuable, that tends to lend itself to carrying on. However, I'm sure security will want to look at it and that may take a while. Checking it would probably be easier, but you would possibly be risking loss.

I think your best option might be the third one: ship it down to your hotel ahead of time. Insure it for the value of a replacement PS2 and any games he might be sending. Then you could either do the same thing coming back (I'm sure the hotel could help with the sending) or just take it on the plane on the way home.

One other thing- I would check to make sure that the TVs in the hotel you are staying at has the appropriate connections to be able to hook the system up. It would be a shame to get all the way down there and then not be able to use it.

Best of Luck!

I wouldn't bother. I mean how much "downtime" do you really think you'll have? If he wants to play some video games let him have a few dollars a day to use in the arcades. Cheaper to do that then risk replacing a PS2.

I just can't imagine lugging a PS2 through an airport, and if you check it my guess is that it will either never work again, or you'll never see it again.

ITA with ducklite on this one, I wouldn't really bother. But if he is bound and determined, I would absolutely CARRY IT ON. Putting it in checked luggage would be akin to checking a laptop. Make sure to pack ALL the cables too, interconnects, power, and controller(s). I know travelling with my laptop, I am often asked to power it up. I would have the power cord handy, in case TSA wants to power up the PS2.

You'd be better off bringing something like a Gameboy so they can play it on the plane.

If he wants to bring it I would let him and I would suggest bringing it in your carry-on. We have one of the new slimmer PS2s and it really does not wiegh that much so I can't imagine the older versions wieghing too much more. I brought one of hte portable DVD players with me to use on the plane and I brought the cables to hook it up to the TV at the resort on a whim and I found that at night and during afternoon breaks it was nice to watch a movie or some Simpson episdoes.

thank you
People have been telling me "its a vacation, not time for PS2" but this is our 1st mother/son vacation and our 1st 2wk vacation - its just the 2 of us this time and I know we'll need some distance at times
It is the slimmer PS2. Im gonna want to keep track of it so it will most likely go in my carry-on (he lost a Game Boy one of our past trips)

Im also seriously thinking about DisneyQuest

We always bring the PS2, (and ours isn't the slim one!) Somehow, my son manages to hook it up to the tv, and really enjoys his down time playing the games. On our upcoming trip, he'll probably just bring his laptop, so that he can stay in touch with his many friends around the world! He's also addicted to one of the new online PS2 games, which I don't think he'll be able to play while we're away from home. We carry the PS2 in one of the specially made PS2 bags, (looks like a satchel, think we got it at Best Buy). Security might take a minute to check it out, but we've never had to power it up or anything, and as you know, it doubles as a dvd player at your hotel! My son is turning 15 at the end of this month, and doesn't spend any time with his Gameboy these days. This trip, we'll be at the CR, and I'm collecting quarters for the arcade, (and the toll roads for the drive from the airport!)
I guess I need to start asking him what he's planning on bringing along for the trip! :flower:
