Can anyone tell me how the transfer of points between members works? We are looking at the entire extended family going at Christmas and did not know if it would be better for them to rent points or have points transfered to us.

Transfer is a final action they become your points.
This can be confirmed through MS
.
Renting is still the original owners points that they have control over.

You still have to make arraingments for payment either way .

I say if you are a member transfer is the better option if not a member then renting is the only option.

IMHO, it would be better to have the points transferred into your account. That way, you would make the reservation and have the control.

It can be a simple thing to do. First, you find another member who has points to transfer. After you agree on the price and means of payment, the other member makes a call to MS (or some do a conference call), MS transfers the points to your account and you're done. The points are in yor account and available for you to use as you wish.

Best wishes -

does payment or transfer of points usually come first? i know its an honor system kind of thing, but what's the norm?

Not really clear how this works ... I'm a DVC member, and I have specific dates in mind (but don't have points). I know how many points I would need for the dates I want, but can't know whether it's available until after I have the points ... which is too late if there isn't availability.

Even though I'm a member, wouldn't it be better with specific dates in mind to rent a reservation rather than points???

Maybe I am the reason our dues keep going up, but I call MS all the time and ask them to look up availability of dates even when I don't plan to reserve those dates during that call. To me, it isn't worth the effort to post a notice that you want to rent or transfer, or to cancel an existing reservation, or look for an airline reservation, or discuss a trip with the extended family, if the dates aren't even available.

Of course, just because the dates were available when you first called, doesn't mean they will still be available later when you round up the points (or confirm the airline tickets, or talk to extended family, etc.), but you have to start your planning somewhere.

Best of luck -- Suzanne

Yea, that's where I get tripped up. With specific, fixed, dates in mind, point transfer doesn't seem to be such a great idea.
