How to transfer iPhone apps to new computer

We got a new iMac and I'm able to transfer our iTunes music library by using the DVD backup disks I have. My question is about syncing our iPhones/iPods to the new computer. When I plug in my iPhone to the new computer and click Sync, I get a message saying, "Are you sure you want to sync applications? All existing applications and their data on the iPhone "Steve's iPhone" will be replaced with applications from this iTunes library."

The problem is we don't yet have any apps in the new iTunes library. Does that mean syncing would erase everything on my iPhone? If so, how do I correct that and get everything onto the new computer?

I do believe that it would wipe them out.

If you still have the old computer with your stuff set up, there is another way that I found easier than discs. If you have the new IMac set up on the same network with your old computer, you can use the home sharing feature in ITunes. You put the two computers on your ITunes account with homesharing on. You can then copy the items from one computer to the other. I was able to move all my music, apps, podcasts, movies, etc. without having to burn a ton of discs. It did take a few hours to copy all my stuff from one computer to the other, but I just got it going and walked away. Now all my old stuff is on my Iphone 4.

Actually your apps will download from the iPhone to the new iMac. The only items that don't transfer is music and photos. I have changed laptops several times before with my iPod touch and it transfered to the new computer. Also when I bought my new iPad the iTunes synced my aps to the iPad.

I already did it by burning the files to a disc, but for everyone else's benefit, can you explain step by step how to do that? When I tried, I got the message I posted earlier today.
