How to make a design ?

Hi there, I am from the UK and just stumbled on this part of the boards. I love to paint and draw, but Im very unfamiliar with designing and stuff. I love some of the t.shirt transfers, and would love to make some for my 18 mth olds first trip to Disneyland Paris in December. I am looking for advice on how I go about making a design. Because I can see how busy the designers are on the site. So if anyone could tell me step by step how to go it I would be grateful.
Lastly I read a post about making sippy cups with transfers on. What paper would I need for that ?

What software do you have?
I also have some disneyland disigns in my photobucket and I am pretty much caught up on my requests so I could do something for ya if you want, just need names and what sort of disign you wanted!
