How to heal a lip sore/bite?

I woke up on Sunday morning with my lower lip swollen and hurting. I immediately assumed that I must've bitten my lip in the middle of the night (never done that before). I was stumped though because the swelling and pain were so bad that I wondered HOW on earth I could've slept through such a thing. It hurts exactly the way my gums would hurt when I accidentally jab myself in the mouth with a toothbrush while brushing...THAT happens a lot! Towards days end the spot turned into a white "ulcer" (like my gums would if jabbed).

It is now Thursday and it STILL hurts and is swollen. I don't think it's a cold sore/fever blister but maybe I'm wrong. I haven't had a cold sore since I was in grade school and have no clue what causes them or how to treat them or how long it lasts! I went out and bought some OTC med for treating fever blisters and having been using it since yesterday afternoon...no real improvement yet other than it drying the heck out of my lip.

If my lips are closed, I can feel part of the sore with my tongue, and it can be seen from the outside too (when my lips are closed). To see the whole thing I'd have to stick my lip out in a "pout".

Any thoughts on what else might help? Icing the spot two nights in a row did reduce the swelling. But the whitish ulceration is still there and the spot still stings. If it's not better by tomorrow I'm going to go to the doctor (or should it be the dentist??)

Well if it is a cold sore...also known as Herpes...(not the same as ******l Herpes) than that is a virus that you will always have. If you had it as a child than you will always. If that is what it is than one of the main factors that will make it reappear is "STRESS" so have you been feeling stressed more than usuall?

As far as how to treat you can get an over the counter med for it or just wait till it goes away in about a week. Try not to kiss anyone untill it is gone because like vag. herpes it is contagious.

My Ds has it and can always tell when his stress level is up because he gets a break out on his mouth.

If you don't see any noticable change of it drying up in a few days that I would get it checked to be sure that it is not something out....

Good luck:thumbsup2

I don't think I've been stressed. If that were the case then I imagine I would've been covered in the darn things a year and a half ago when I was battling chronic daily migraines, acid reflux and anxiety attacks...all due to stress. I'm fairly certain I had a cold sore as a kid...but I could be wrong. Maybe I'm just assuming I did??? To be safe I am certianly not kissing anyone (man was Valentine's Day a let down!)

I am still hoping that it was caused by biting my lip in the middle of the night. But it is so annoying! Would swishing with salt water help? I tried using Listerine and it felt like I was burning a hole through the spot!

If it's a canker sore, you can use hydrogen peroxide to clean it out. I used to get a ton of these when I wore braces, and there is a type of mouthwash made by Colgate called Peroxyl that is for canker sores. It works, and they seem to heal faster.

Hope that helps!

Abreva works great on cold sores - also for the internal part that hurts Kankaid is what my DS swears by. He gets lots of canker sores due to his braces.
