How to get to X Caret on our own?

IMHO, I don't think this is one to consider doing on your own. You will be on a tight schedule to make it back to the ship on time before it departs. You will spend more time traveling to get to and from than at Xcaret itself. I am not sure if i have seen any posts where folks did this on their own. I am sure you will get other comments about trying to do this excursion on your own.

Thanks for responding. We arrive at 11:00 a.m. and depart at midnight, I thought that gave us plenty of time. Does it really take that long to get there?

I would plan about two hours one way to get there and two hours to get back. How long is the excursion time listed for? Are you taking little kids? You have to take a ferry from Cozumel over to the mainland, and then i would say about an hour or so long bus ride to get to Xcaret.

Channakaab Park might be a cheaper and similar experience that you could easily do on your own without all the travel time.

I didn't relalize it would take close to 4 hours travel time. I thought I read where it was approx. 1 hour each way.

We were hoping to do swim with the Dolphins there. We had booked the swim at Chankanab (sp?) but were later cancelled by them due to the cruise lines taking all the spots.

My girls are 9 and 10.

I think the ferry will take about a half an hour to cross over, and then it is about an hour's drive south. Someone please correct me if this isn't right. We did this when we stayed in Cancun, and it took like an hour and a half one way to get there...

You're about right. We drove there while we were vacationing in Cancun as well. You will need to set aside about 4 hours for round trip traveling to be safe.
