how to clean a canvas umbrella

Our umbrella is in dire need of cleaning (looks like mildew?) it is way too heavy to take down & is pretty tall. Anyone had any success in this area?

I did take mine down and used a mixture of Clorox and water to soak it down. I used a spray bottle, but you could also use one of those garden sprayers or maybe a Miracle Grow sprayer that hooks to your hose. It did not bleach out the color of the umbrella - it was green and white stripes, but it sure did clean it. It killed all the mildew and looked beautiful!!!

Do not, I repeat DO NOT take your power washer to it. I blew a hole right through it! Live and learn... we're now in the market for a new umbrella!

It usually has to dry before you can tell that it worked. It takes a little while for the Clorix to kill the mildew - I think it's a spore.
