How to buy outside groceries when staying onsite?

Hello everyone,

I was wondering, how do we buy groceries from nearby supermarkets, if we are staying on Disney property without a rental car? Do we just call a taxi to come pick us up and bring us back? I'm thinking that would be very expensive if the cab has to wait for us while we shop? Also, my son is two years old, can he ride the taxi (and Disney transportation) without a car seat?

My son goes through almost a whole half gallon of milk a day. I know, its too much. We try to limit him but he cries and cries for it. I don't think that will change much in 19 days and he's used to organic milk (lactose intolerant), I can't switch him to regular milk for 10 days, it might make him sick.

I read on gardengrocer.com, is that my best option rather then going out to shop? Is there a shuttle that takes guests off-property to do some grocery shopping?

Thanks so much in advance

Your best bet is use gardengrocer.com, they have a great web site easy to navigate just like walking through the grocery store. We used them last year when we rented a camper at Fort Wilderness, we just ordered snacks, lunch meats, cereal, milk, etc. Disney does not provide any transportation to go off site shopping. The only thing close is a Hess gas station across the street from Downtown Disney, you would have to walk about a 1/2 mile across a busy road then carry all your goodies back, and its like shopping in a 7-11. Plus it would take a lot of time and not worth it. We had Garden Grocer set to deliver between 8-9am on our second day and they arrived right on time. And they will also deliver and drop items at the front desk at most resorts for you to pickup later so you don't have to wait around.

We've used gardengrocer.com before too with great success. We scheduled them to deliver to our resort just before we arrived. When we checked in they delivered our groceries to our room. Easy peasy and it's got to more cost effective than taking a cab to the grocery store.

GardenGrocer and WeGoShop are both useful services, if you don't have a car.

My friends were at AKL recently and they said that a dozen eggs at the grocery there was way cheaper than what they pay here in NYC (expected) or at their house in the country upstate (unexpected). So I learned not to write off onsite grocery prices from their experience. :)

Thanks so much for your responses!

Using Gardengrocer does seem much cheaper then renting a car, I guess I was overly-thinking things and was worried about the milk spoiling in the car while they deliver to us. I don't think we would be their only stop, so I was afraid by the time it got to us, it would have already sat in the car for hours.

If you are gone, does the front desk hold your groceries for you, or do they have someone leave it inside your room?

If you have specialty needs for food at all, I recommend We Go Shop as opposed to Garden Grocer. I've used both and found We Go Shop to be cheaper (she really looks to find you good deals on your requested items) and you get unlimited selection of brands, etc. I had good experiences with both, however will use We Go Shop in the future as it was just a better service for us.

They were able to leave our groceries at Guest Services, we paid on credit card over the phone I believe.

We have used Garden Grocer 3 times. Not sure if your son is used to a particular braind, but they have Horizon organic milk in individual servings you can store at room temp and chill prior to consumption. If he's drinking that much that's what I'd recommend unless you are staying in a villa with a full size fridge. Biggest fridge outside of that is going to be hip high, but most are pretty small.

Here's ours stocked after I put our groceries away last trip. My 2 children had the Hershey's individual sized milks. Plus we had a half gallon.

The 2 times we flew I set our delivery time to about an hour or 90 minutes after our plane was scheduled to land. I got a text that they'd made the drop while I'm in line to check in.

Last time I drove and we got caught in traffic and were late getting there. We arrived about 90 minutes after the arrival time I'd set. Non-perishable stuff I'd ordered. Heavy stuff like a case of bottled water and boxes of Caprisun were in the room when I got there. They'd kept the perishable items in Gues services. I called and they brought it to me.

Never had a problem. They've been on time and double bag the items. Just logged in today to start getting my order together for our trip next month.

We had a really good experience with Garden Grocer in October. Got a text as our plane was landing that they had delivered our order to POR, who stored it until we arrived then delivered everything. I though considering the convenience factor, it was a reasonable deal. Certainly beat me having to rent a car and go to the store and cheaper than the resort store even with the delivery fee.
