How To Avoid Culture Shock at DLP

My husband and I are avid Disney parks fans, and before we moved to the UK last year, we had APs for Disneyland and had been to WDW on my husband’s 30th birthday, and he worked there during the college program and beyond (he is AZDisneyDan on these boards).

So we now have APs for DLP and this is our third time being here, but our first real trip during the infamous summer crowds. We knew it would be crowded so we stayed for 5 nights, 6 days in order to not feel rushed. We are both well aware of the many cultural differences between Americans and Europeans, but as I felt frustrated and annoyed with many people in the parks I started to put a list together in my head of all the differences so that when anyone goes to DLP they can avoid the shock, know things will be different and maybe they can enjoy themselves just a little bit more…we still had a fabulous time and I would take a busy day at any Disney park any day of the week than sitting at home writing this! So here goes:
What to expect at DLP:

• The park is visually stunning, probably one of the best looking parks, but the guests do not take care of it, as many rides have graffiti on the walls (i.e. Peter Pan, & Big Thunder are two examples of the queues having graffiti-even the new Crush’s Coaster which opened less than a month ago had some writing on the walls) (we thought for the 15th Anniversary all of this would have been fixed)
• Cast members do not clean up trash in the queues throughout the day, so you will find overfilled garbage cans everywhere
• Smokers fill the air throughout the parks, in line and everywhere else without a care in the world for who it affects. I felt like I was in a smoky outside bar 85% of the time
• Most guests feel that the “line” is just a guideline and not something to actually follow-you get many kids walking around you and trying to get ahead of you like its normal (they make the queues very wide and so no one follows the single file rule)
• If they do follow the single file rule, they stand on top of you, to the point where they are physically touching you. Personal space does not exist at DLP!
• Shops on Main Street are not all open before the park opens or even as soon as the park opens! The emporium was not open even though hundreds of people were streaming into the park before opening! (and extra magic hours were happening)
• If you want ice cream at the end of the night-forget it! Get in the Main Street ice cream shop before park closing time because as soon as the park closes, so does the ice cream shop-they do not stay open like the Emporium or other shops on Main Street
• We were there for the very first morning extra magic hours so I am hoping they are just working out the kinks but we stood at a rope outside the security gates (before you even enter the main area by the Disneyland Hotel) until after 8 AM-almost 10 after-and EMH were supposed to be from 8-10. So about one hundred people were waiting and getting upset and when they did let us through, it was one by one to check passes and do security checks (in my opinion they could have been doing all this prior to park opening and had us waiting at the area where they actually take your tickets…since any Disneyland Hotel guest would have had an advantage by already being inside the “security checkpoint” area, while all of the other Hotel Guests were forced to wait outside, even after the park was supposed to be open.
• They start letting all guests in around 9 AM during EMH (the park opens at 10) and while they have ropes set up in front of Fantasyland and Discoveryland, in order to only let in people from the hotels, we noticed they were very inconsistent, one cast member stood there and people just walked in, no checking at all…so you can imagine that the 4 rides open during EMH got lines very quickly-we rode Buzz Lightyear once but as soon as 9AM hit-there was a line. There seemed to be a connection with the lines getting super long and non-hotel guests being let into the park! (also if you walk through the Dragon’s Lair below the castle, there is no one checking so anyone can get into Fantasyland.
• Nighttime EMH hours have similar issues, as no cast members seem to check wristbands (we were only asked about half the time)
• The crowds are huge during summertime and unfortunately the people don’t have a ton of options, since Disney doesn’t start fireworks or nighttime parades (Fantillusion) until July 14th, even though they start extending hours on July 7th. So you have all the extra crowds, but only so many places where they can be…this leads to long lines all night! (Nighttime parades and fireworks spreads out the crowds easing certain areas)
• Park hours are now extended until 11 each night BUT when we first arrived, the park was open until 9 PM…here is what we discovered about food: Fast food places such as burger and pizza shops closed at 7, but cast members stopped letting people in around 6:15 or so. For Europeans, I think they eat lunch around 2-3, snack on hot dogs and ice cream and popcorn until the park closes at 9 and then everyone is dumped into the Disney Village (so you better have ressies) to eat after 9…for those of us who did not realize this and got hungry between 6-7, found it quite difficult to eat dinner-unless we wanted the expensive sit down steak house or Walt’s, our only other options were basically hot dogs. We did manage to be the last ones to get into Bella Notte to have pizza before they stopped letting people in at 6:40. But with the parks open until 11, now most fast dining is open until 10. (although try getting a snack around 10-good luck!)
• Guests either do not realize or do not care that taking flash photos in dark rides is very distracting and annoying to other guests-an no one enforces anyone to not take photos-so Phantom Manor and Pirates always have constant flashing going on

• On Pirates, they fill each row completely, unlike Disneyland and WDW, if you have a party of 2, you will not be by yourself in the tight little row-they will put two strangers on top of you

This list does not mean I had a bad time, in fact we had a wonderful time with some frustrating moments, but we were pixie dust-ed many times-in fact the best night was Sunday night, the parks were open until 11 but a downpour of rain caused many to leave. And after doing the whole park basically in the hours between 9-11 (except Buzz) as walk-ons, we ended the night by going on Pirates right at 11-we were the only ones there-5 boats surrounded as and were empty-it was surreal and creepy at the same time. But we felt like the park was ours, riding by ourselves, and no one around flashing their cameras….

Afterwards, we went to the shop attached to Pirates expecting it to be closed or for the Cast Members to kick us out-they did neither-we bought all our pirate gear for the cruise and had a really great conversation with a “Pirate Cast member” We felt the magic that night-and all the other stuff just melted away…..

So take this list as you wish-it’s just some warnings about behavior and cultural differences, not meant to offend anyone-just some observations we noticed. Have fun if you are going-I know we’ll be going again soon!!!

DLP is a beautiful park, I agree. The graffiti problem makes my blood boil. Like you, I thought it would have been cleared up for this year (see my trip report) but it wasn't. Which is a real shame.

Queuing in DLP is a contact sport, make no mistake about it. It wasn't 'too' bad when we were there last but pushing and shoving still occurred. However, lots of people were hauling queue jumpers off to the sides etc. Usually people tend to say nothing.

I tend to be very articulate in a queue, swinging my arms, rocking back and forth etc. just to protect my 'personal' space. Coughing on people also seems to work :)

They tried out extra magic hours last year (we had them in April) so any problems with the system just shouldn't occur now. However, they were quite lax this time. I even saw one cast member handing out wristbands to non-residents on the Dumbo ride, which is a big no-no IMO.

We have always had a seat on Pirates to ourselves, wether it's only two or all four of us.

I've gotta admit that I noticed that the most disrespectful park guests seemed to be the ones all Disneyed up (Mickey shirts, Mickey ears, Sorcerer's hats etc.) Queue jumping and throwing rubbish at bins and not picking it up if it didn't go in.

The first time I went was around eight years ago, we happened to be in Paris for my birthday and my girlfriend asked what I wanted to do :goodvibes

It was November, it was cold and raining, the park was empty, everything was a walk on, it was eerie... but we had a great time!

I had to laugh at this, b/c my husband and I did the same thing-we spent the queue figuring out how to not let people push past us...we had one hilarious moment where my husband just turned and stared at a girl who was practically on top of us-and I was laughing so hard I was crying-she ended up hiding in the corner of the queue of Buzz Lightyear-and letting like 25 people go ahead of her-I think we scared her off! ; )

The EMH really gets me going-I can't believe how lax they are about it! I didn't know they did last April-you're right all the kinks should have been worked out by now.....

By the way, we had a downpour of rain on Monday and we figured out you can walk almost half of one side of the park all under canopies and hidden back walkways-love those imagineers! We went from Frontierland to Main street and never walked out in the open!
:cool1:

Yep, there is an almost fully covered walkway from Liberty Arcade all the way up to Peter Pan, we used it on our last day. It's a godsend in DLP.

Despite it raining on our last day we were bone dry for most of it... until we went on Big Thunder Mountain!

The extra magic hours are supposed to be a bonus for Disney hotel residents, last year it felt like it. Lots of people were getting turned away from rides, there was a lot of checking going on. People knew the score, they just kept trying it on.

This year the policing of it is very half-hearted, which is a shame IMO.

I dont recall seeing any grafitti, and there always seemed to be someone sweeping up litter,so no complaints on that front.

the smoking  argh, a few times my son almost got a cigarette burn !

plus the worst dress sense ever seen ,we made it a game to see who could spot the worst outfit ;)

:rotfl:

Big Thunder Mountain and Peter Pan in particular are covered in grafitti.

didnt do BTM, but we did do peter pan, dont recall seeing any, but it was the first ride of the day so we were a tad excitable lol :cool1:

There is some graffiti but it must be hard to deal with......the mentality of guests need to change.

On the smoking, I actually think it has improved slightly but it does create a problem once in a while.

Queueing is a big problem for me. People tend to be ok in the actual queues. Character interactions are just madness........how difficult would it be to do it right? Personal space is an issue.

• Guests either do not realize or do not care that taking flash photos in dark rides is very distracting and annoying to other guests-an no one enforces anyone to not take photos-so Phantom Manor and Pirates always have constant flashing going on - agree - it's a pain in the bum. I reached over and told a guest not to do it - I don't think they were impressed!!! I almost always have a row on pirates for the two of us but I guess it depends when you go and how busy it is.

We didn't take pics of the graffiti-but we did take some pics of the trash (when you wait in line and stare at it you find yourself taking a photo...)

Anyway, here are a few examples....

In line at Storybook Ride...

Snow White-a trash can is literally next to it and people threw trash in what I can only assume is meant for cigarettes?

On Main Street, in the seating area in front of the ice cream shop....

My issue with the queuing problem in DLRP was the behaviour of folk whilst waiting for parades - I quickly got the hang of having a sharp elbow handy on other occasions but the parade seemed to bring out the worst in people I stood for ages staking out a spot but this didnt' inhibit anyone from barging in front seconds before the parade arrived. I did think the cast members could manage things a little better although I'm not entirely sure how.

We were there July 1 and 2, a couple of observations:

During the evening EMH on July 2, the CMs were very vigorously checking for wristbands. Note, though, that I think the only place you can get wristbands is at the Main Street train station (rather than throughout the park as at WDW). We had taken a mid-day break and so received ours as we re-entered the park, but I suppose if you were in the park earlier you'd have to come back down Main Street to receive your wristband.

The really wide queues in many rides made it harder, but our family of 3 has developed the technique of making ourselves wide to prevent the creeping up. Footwork is important, and particularly watch the switchbacks.

Didn't notice the graffiti, did notice the accumulation of trash in the queues.

As much as the over-merchandising at WDW is a turnoff, I was surprised at the limited store hours in the Disneyland park, and the limited selection at the Disney Fashion store in the Village.

I didnt relise that DLRP is known for que jumpers wow glad i know this our family of 8 will be on the look out no shoving past us he he we got it really bad last year in WDW but my Dad is quiet out spoken when some thing happens he dont like can get embarissing

didnt know about th q jumping either! thats bit disapointing!

Deff not happy about the smoking and stuff because we just all got rid of that here!! :(

We don't have a problem with queue jumpers as there are 6 of us in our party and we have perfected the art of spreading ourselves across the queue. The smoking is a real pain - I wish they had desginated smoking areas, and they certainly shouldn't be allowed to light up in the queues.
Our biggest bug bear is the lack of understanding as to what "fastpass" means - we have seen people waiting at the fastpass entrance up to half an hour before their designated time of entry, they then cause a bottleneck, and block the way in for those with active fastpasses. What is that all about!
I can't say I have ever seen any grafitti, but they do seem to be a bit slow clearing tables when the customer can't be bothered to take their empty food containers over to the bins, which is something else which annoys me.
But the strangest thing I have seen, is someone actually changing their baby's nappy on the table in the cowboy cookout, plus numerous times we have seen small boys answering a call of nature in a corner or up against a wall when in the queue for a ride. I understand kids can be caught short, but I would expect someont to leave the queue and take a child to the loo, rather than allow them to do it there and then!
:confused3 :confused3

i completely agree!!
i mean i love dlp so much, but it just isnt florida due to the fact that its not kept as nicely! ive had some brilliant times at both dlp and wdw, but i get more frustrated in dlp because of people being unable to queue and pushing, and the smoking realy gets on my nerves!!

when i went to dlp in april, me boyfriend and i waited for over an hour on main street to get a good spot for the parade, and then this family just came and tried to push us outof the way, and i felt bad for their kids and everything cos they couldnt see anything cos they were right at the back, but get there an hour before not 5 mins before and try and push people. and then she kept shoving her camera in my face as well!!

So take this list as you wish-it’s just some warnings about behavior and cultural differences, not meant to offend anyone-just some observations we noticed

once again I have teeth marks on my tongue, but feel the need to say something, and I will try and be diplomatic.

Many of the posters on the DLRP board are from the UK, a few from the US, and a handful of us from various countries in Europe. As you yourself note, there are cultural differences. What may be offensive or bothersome to you may not be to others, just as what may be natural to you may be offensive or bothersome to others.

I have learned to compartmentalize my life as an ex-pat; when in North America, I try and follow North American custom and behaviour; when in Europe I become much more German. Neither is 'better', just 'different'

I recently had the delight to visit DLRP with an American who was openminded to learning about new cultures. Her response was almost entirely positive, and if she did notice something 'different' than the American parks, she voiced it in a positive manner.

I read your review and frankly for the most part, I have not had the same experiences, even though I myself was there recently. I suspect that is because we viewed it through different eyes - yours as American, mine as German. One is not better than another, they are just different.

I will try and be positive and assume that the point of this post was to actually encourage those from other countries to embrace the differences. Unfortunately after reading it many times, I did not see it that way. I also read some of the responses as being negative towards other cultures, who may not queue as a habit, or to whom public urination by children is accepted. (I myself watered some bushes as a child, during long roadtrips)

I believe that Elaine has said it best: http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1477038

I will try and be positive and assume that the point of this post was to actually encourage those from other countries to embrace the differences.

I also hope that this was the OP's intention, but unfortunately this thread has already given some people the opportunity to point the finger. Please read the DLP Posting Rule sticky at the top of the page and play nicely - otherwise this thread will have to be closed.

I hope no one has taken offence at what I said about what I considered bizarre behaviours I had witnessed at DLRP, such as the urinating in the line etc, as that was certainly not my intention, and I was certainly not implying that any of this was a culturally specific behaviour. I did not know the nationality of any of the individuals I mentioned and that would not have mattered in any case...I just found it a bit bizarre whatever nationality. I would find it strange behaviour if it happened in my own home town!
I am well aware that "bizareness" is in the eye of the beholder and what I have described may not be seen as bizarre by all individuals, and may in fact be completely normal behaviour to some, and I was merely expressing my own personal opinion. I am sure that many people out there think that I am bordering on the bizarre myself - I mean how many people walk around DLRP dressed as a pirate!

I am sure that the OP, like myself, did not intend this thread in any way to be a slight on any other nations, and I am also sure that the majority of DISers would be able to see that!

As the OP, I feel the need to defend myself a little here....I have been living in the UK for a year and have visited many countries in that time, and have even been to two theme parks (In Stockholm and Copenhagen) and I did not witness any of the issues I listed in either of those theme parks. But that's not the point, I try to be open and understanding to different cultures, it is the reason I moved here, to immerse myself in European culture for awhile before I head back to America in a few years....so with that in mind, I just want to repeat I was at DLRP and while becoming increasingly frustrated with certain things I was witnessing, I figured I would put this post out to Americans who may visit the parks and give them a heads up....but I am open to hearing your views (Bavaria) on maybe things you noticed that were different...or tell me its normal to jump the queu (although we did notice many a french parent pull back their kid who was trying to jump the line-so it doesn't seem to be a french culture thing, and I don't think full trash bins are either-I think the trash bins is more a comment on the Disney corporation out there and how they run the park.) Even smoking, which many countries in Europe have now banned in public spaces, is becoming more widespread and as seen as more of a public health issue. And it is a rule at Disney to not smoke in the line, it's just not heavily enforced, sadly.

So again, I am not trying to offend anyone's culture, I am just noting behavior...I don't think a thread like this should be closed as I think its good open dialogue and helps other people understand that when they go to DLRP it will be different and to expect differences than at an American park.

I found the original post rather useful..it's good to feel 'armed' with knowledge than to get there and be shocked/bemused etc by things one sees. I viewed the original post as a 'things we love and things we don't' kind of thing, if you see what I mean? We do this a lot of various military forums I post on...it's amazing how one person can adore a particular posting whilst another absolutely detests it. And it's only personal opinions.
It seems a shame that the litter is a problem, living in Germany I love, love, LOVE how clean it is, nobody drops litter here (well, not where I live anyway!). I also think it is sad that some disrespectful folk have chosen to vandalise the place with graffitti.
I am a Brit living away from 'home' and have found myself adpating my ways to the ways of those around me having lived amongst my new country folk for almost 3 years.
I firmly believe that there are no rights or wrongs, only differences. It's just the way we have all been brought up, we have differing values, customs etc.

I still can't wait to go..... I just love the fact that from helpful posts on here I feel much more prepared....knowledge is power I guess!! :yay:
