How to apply free upgrade tickets to AP

If I buy a pkg with 1 day ticket and get the current offer of free ticket upgrade of a hopper and water--can I convert this to an AP at checkin?
How does the money apply and what is my final cost?
What is the benefit of having an AP other than length of my stay and a return visit this year?

You would lose your water park upgrade if you upgrade at arrival. I would buy tickets for my entire stay and then upgrade to AP on the day you're leaving. You can apply all of the money towards your AP pass.

If you use a water park option, you will only be able to upgrade to a premium AP, not a regular AP.

exactly... and if you do not use the free upgrade.. you can apply only the money that you paid out towards your AP pass... so in other words, Disney will not upgrade you for free then let you use that towards an AP... it is $$ for $$.. don't use your free upgrade & pay the price difference of what you paid to what the AP will cost. Use your free upgrade & pay the difference of what that ticket cost to a PAP.. which is much more money!
