The following sentence contains either a single error or no error at all. If the sentence contains an error, select the one underlined part that must be changed to make the sentence correct. If the sentence contains no error, select choice E.

Most states have various levels of football
A
competition in their high schools so that
B
schools with similar numbers of students compete
C
only against them.
D
No error
E

You may as well ask me to diagram the sentence while I'm at it. :faint:

I choose D as well.

Our eighth graders used to have to pass this kind of test in order to move on to high school. Thank goodness someone saw the insanity of that one!

:rotfl2: Now that sent Dt. Coke all over my screen!! If we have diagram it we might as well have a few fractions add.

Or not being a fan of the run-on sentence:

Most states have various levels of football competition in their high schools. Schools with similar numbers of students, compete only against them.

Either way, you need a comma. Was this one of the choices? :confused3

While not exactly INcorrect, "D" can be worded better.
Instead of "them" it could be "each other" or "one another".

I'm clearly not monkeyboy, but here's the answer (I googled it--it's an SAT question)

In white, highlight to read

Answer: D
The error in this sentence occurs at (D), where there is illogical pronoun use. It doesn’t make sense to say that schools competed against “them” when “them” could refer to “high schools,” “schools,” or even “students.” Instead, “one another” or “each other” is needed.

It took me a minute to think, but I luckily chose the right answer!

Sounds like a Praxis question to me.

Exactly. What does "them" refer to anyway? Not a clear enough link to what "them" is replacing (assumed to be replacing "the other schools"?).
