How reliable is Fare Cast?

I have been checking Fare Cast and for about 2 months it has said to hold off on buying airfare because fares would be dropping $50+. I am now 39 days out and still don't have airfare! Should I just buy it, or keep holding out? It says 80% certainty they will drop.

It's a best guess...based on historical trends, the problem with historical trends is things do not always follow trends. The good news currently is fuel is fairly stable to decreasing at the moment; but airlines will be impacted by delays resulting from the FAA forloughs, which could increase their costs and put pressure on prices.

Its pretty useless. Historical trends in airfares do not represent what will happen in the future. There are too many factors that affect airline pricing and they cannot be accurately predicted. Things like airline mergers, cost of fuel, new entrants into a particular market (city pairs), airlines leaving a particular market, and just the more knowable supply and demand. If somebody could accurately predict all that they would be making a killing in the stock market.

IMO I think you should buy this week....check prices late (about 11 pm or later) on Tuesday evening (tonight), Wednesday evening, or very early Thursday morning. I have found over the years those are the timeframes I get my best prices. I have also found I usually get the best price about six to eight weeks out, unless we are traveling during a very high travel period (i.e. Thanksgiving, or a few days before or after Christmas holidays) Also, don't know which day of week you need to travel, but, keep mind you will get the best prices for Tues, Wed and Thurs travel as opposed to weekends. Highest prices will usually be on a Sunday. Good luck.
