I can't wait to watch the Disney movies with my DS wen he gets older...they are so much fun and magical. He is only 14 months and I know it will be a while. Just curious at what age kids can watch a full-length Disney movie (i.e. Lion King, Alladin, etc.). How old was your DC when you took them to see their first movie at the theater?

Just wondering!

my daughter will be 3 next month and she has been actually watching movies for a little over a year but I have but them on for her at around 9 months for so...She has also gone to the movies 3 times, the first being Robots and the last being Curious George. She did well in the movies but she loves to watch her dvds in her bed on her portable dvd player. she has Brother Bear, Aladdin and The Little Mermaid memorized....

My DD started watching Disney movies at around age 3, but she still doesn't make it all the way through an animated one. She much prefers real people, especially children. Her favorite is Mary Poppins and she also likes The Parent Trap. I have never gotten around to taking her to a movie in a theater yet.

DD was almost 2 when we took her to her first theater movie, Nemo. She did alright. Actually we also brought her a Pooh lift-the-flap book which she flipped through on my lap during part of the movie.

I don't recall when they started watching long videos at home. I do know older DD was over 2 before we even had any kids movies- someone gave us an old Clifford video and I put it in one day when I needed her to go to sleep and leave me alone. Then somehow in the last 5 years the collection of videos has mushroomed!

I know just before she turned 3 older DD was obsessed with Bugs Life and Chicken Run so definitely watching full-length by then!

Both of my kids seemed to watch a full length movie at about 20-22 months, although it wasn't very often that they had the opportunity. Also, my DD seemed to like animated movies- Cinderella was her favorite, while my DS preferred the Pixar-type movies- Finding Nemo and Toy Story.

Our children were able to cut their teeth on The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh between 2.5 and 3. That one is nice because the movie is divided into chapters with each chapter pretty much independent of the others. So you have some stopping natural points if your child needs to take a break from the movie.

Some of the other Disney movies (especially the newer ones) can be a little dark and scary, so you really have to decide for yourself which ones your child can take at a given ages.

The only other suggestion that I can make is that you preview the movie prior to letting your child watch it with you. While I remember the basic story, I sometimes forget scenes when I haven't watched a movie for a while. Unexpected scary scenes can be a very bad thing.

Not sure about the theaters, but my DD and DS were both around 2 when they sat through a Disney movie. My DD was 4 when she went to her first movie in the theater, haven't tried yet with DS. My DS who is 27 months now will sit through Toy Story and a few others with no problems, yet others he sits for about 10-15 minutes. I think it depends on their likes and dislikes. As a matter of fact our house is now the official Toy Story viewing center :rotfl: , he puts it on in the morning and would watch it all day if I let him. Put it this way he has watched it so many times he can now operate the DVD player. Here's wishing you many happy memories of watching Disney classics with your little one.

Well lets see, our youngest was about 6 weeks old when he saw Toy Story 2. But I dont think that's what you mean.

I remember our oldest being addicted to 101 Dalmations before he was 2.

My DD watxhed her first movie all the way through at a little over a year old - Toy Story. My ds has yet to sit for longer than 45 minutes to watch something.

DS loved Cinderella when he was under two. In fact, when DH and I informed him that he was going to have a little sister and asked what we should name her, he paused, and then said with all certainty, "Cinderella!" He was two.

You can always break the movies up into segments, or even just let your child watch the favorite parts. I know DS loved the beginning of Cinderella, but didn't like it when the stepsisters tore her dress. DD loves The Little Mermaid, but she doesn't like Ursula. If a fast-forwarded over Ursula, she would pick that all the time.

There are plenty of Disney movies that are not as scary as others. Lady and the Tramp is a favorite at our house, and the kids just watched Oliver and Company and enjoyed that as well. You could also just show the Sorceror's Apprentice part of Fantasia. My kids enjoy all of that movie, but turn it off before Night on Bald Mountain. Poohs Heffalump Movie is also cute.

After "Da", my DS' first recognizable words were "Bare Tessies". Not just spoken, mind you, but shouted, as a demand: he wanted to watch "The Jungle Book" yet again. He was right around 2 when that happened. He has always had a long attention span when he is really interested in something -- at 7 mos. he sat on DH' lap just mesmerized through an entire Sugar Bowl game.

BTW, he's almost 9, and is still not big on live-action movies or television -- he will prefer animation every time. (Well, almost every time: the exception is any Star Wars movie. He first rode Star Tours at 30 mos, insisted on seeing the movies shortly after that, and has been hooked ever since.)

My DS7 is the same way. The only live-action movies he likes are Star Wars (episodes 4 and 5...emperor is too scary in 6 and the new ones are too scary/intense), Mary Poppins, and March of the Penguins.

My nephew was 2 and half when he went to see Toy Story II. He LOVED every minute of it and was so well behaved, he wanted to see it again when it was over, we ended up stoping to by the first Toy Story on the way home. After that EVERYTHING was Buzz and we watched Toy Story everyday until Toy Story II came out on video....it was a long couple of months.

My DS is 23 months and watched the Tigger Movie on DVD tonight. We haven't tried the theatre yet, but probably will soon. He has tons of DVD's and he doesn't always sit through the features but sometimes (like tonight) he does. I'm not sure if he does so because he's familiar with the movie or not. I bought him the Three Musketeers with Mickey, Donald and Goofy last month and at first he didn't sit through it but now he requests it (by putting it in the DVD player and turning it on himself) and will sit through all of it.

I don't believe he has sat completey through any feature the first time he watches it which is why I've been holding off on the theatre. Also, he does better with characters he recognizes, like Pooh which he loves (and its a good thing because I love Pooh and his nursery is all Pooh). We have other movies (Brother Bear, Lady and the Tramp, Bambi, etc) but since he doesn't know the characters from books and stuffed animals he's not as interested.

I agree with the previous poster about watching it first before letting DC watch it. I was a teen/adult when the Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Monster's Inc., Toy Story, Finding Nemo, etc. were released so I can't specifically recall what parts may be scary for a wee one. I can't remember but I'm hoping Toy Story doesn't have any scary parts. We need to watch that one soon so that DS will be excited to wear the Pull Ups with Woody on them. :teeth: I believe the girl Pull Ups have the princesses on them. princess:

My DS was 3 when we took him to see Finding Nemo. He was antsy by the end of it. Now he is 6 and goes with his father a lot to the movies (daddy time!) and even now by the end he is antsy. It is not a special treat like it was for us when we were little to go to the movies since they can watch all the DVD's they want at any time!

We have been gearing up for some of the Disney movies -- I found a mini board book set at Target. It has about 10 books featuring the Disney movies. His favorite book is Alladin, I think mostly because he can say "Abu"! I also have a CD with some of the Disney movie songs (Be Our Guest, Hakuna Matada, etc.)

I am looking forward to sharing these Disney classics with him. Maybe we'll start down the road with some of the Pooh movies or Lady & the Tramp as it's been suggested. DS likes shorter shows like Thomas and the Wiggles. Sometimes he sits and watches for 15 minutes, sometimes a half hour...I guess it all depends. Thanks all for sharing!

I remember my DS bring addicted to the Thomas the Tank Engine live-action movie when he was 2 :crazy2: (not my favorite!).

As for theater movies, we took him to his first one when he was 3 for his birthday - Monsters Inc. Now keep in mind that this is what he looked like at the time whenever we took him to a children's museum:

:jumping1:

However, he sat through the enitre movie beautifully. :)

DD, on the other hand, has been to theater movies since she was 6 weeks old (Lilo & Stitch was her first movie!).

They both still LOVE going to the movies, and they are always quiet and sit still. (What IS it about the movies that has that effect?? :confused3 :teeth: )
They even sat through Greatest Game (a wonderful but not typical little kids' movie) - TWICE - at their choosing!!

My DS is 6 and is still a Thomas freak. I thought by now he would have outgrown it but no way. He would be in heaven if there was a Thomas theme park.
