How Often Do You Replace Your Dishes?

The thread about buying new flatware got me thinking. We're having our 32nd wedding anniversary in May and we're still using the everyday dishes we got as wedding gifts. It's a good quality Noritake stoneware set. A few pieces have broken over the years, but we still have most of the 10 place settings we received in 1988! I was just thinking that I'm getting tired of the set and would like to replace it. We also have the same flatware set that my grandma gave us for our wedding. I hate to get rid of it since it was a gift from Grandma who died in 1999. But some of the spoons are chewed up from being dropped in the garbage disposal and a few pieces have disappeared over the years (probably buried deep in a kid's room)! Is it weird that we've had the same dishes and flatware for so long?

Not often. As things break, we replace it. We moved on to not-breakable plates now.

We replaced ours after our last move. We were still using our original dishes from the early 2000s.

I"m a keeper of stuff, so we're still using our Fiesta ware that we got 20 years ago. I have added some cheaper, smaller plates for the kids. I also still have 2 sets of inherited china that looks pretty in the china cabinet, but it never comes out. One is the Lenox Eternal. But for everyday use, I'm happy with our old stuff, but if you're tired of yours, I say get a new set, a pattern you like better. MIL recently updated hers, and she's happy. But I'm pretty sentimental, I 'll stick with our old stuff for now

We are married just over 15 years and still have and use our good china for larger gatherings in the dining room. I also have my nicer china I had as a single.. and my old day to day in the basement from my single days.. when I think about it. I kinda of collect place settings. In the kitchen we use very cheap white Ikea, type and that gets tossed or replaced when I find a nice new set.. I am talking like 30-50 dollars for a setting for 8. These get chipped, broken over the years...

I also have from my parents our thanksgiving, colonial pattern china that gets used for thanksgiving.. over 40 years old.

I am the one who started the flatware post! And guess what's next after flatware? Yep, my dishes. Mine are so old. I bought them at Bed Bath and Beyond for my first apartment. They were in a box in the aisle at the store for a super discount...A service for 8 for like $25-$30. Ha! I can't believe how long they have lasted. They are super sturdy and none of them have broken! The problem is that they are not that nice to look at. They will go next, but it is a bit hard to say goodbye to something that still works well.

We got Pfaltzgraf as a wedding gift in 1996. Those were used daily until a couple years ago when I replaced them with Fiestaware.

I don't think it's weird. Ours is going on 18 years. Its Pfaltzgraf stoneware and has been pretty indestructible and still in great condition.

We have pfaltzgraf too about the same age. They’ve held up really well.
I have my grandma’s silverware for everyday and I’m not sure how old that is but it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s over 40 years old.

I don't think so.

I got my dishes from my great-aunt's house when she died. She would purchase things by mail order, then, when they arrived, just put the box "somewhere" in the house. There was a whole lot of dishes from Jewel Tea so I claimed them. I'm still using them some 30+ years later.

My silverware was the same, a couple of boxes (2 different patterns) from her house. When my mother died 7 years ago I got her wedding silverware - 16 place settings.

I just replace pieces (if necessary). I can't see buy a whole new set of dishes/silverware just because I've had it a long time.

I just bought a new dish set from Macy’s on a deep discount. Everything we had was mismatched and chipped and over 10 years old. I mainly just wanted matching things finally!

When enough are broken that I don't have enough plates to serve my family on I would venture... I don't really have an urge to replace plates or silverware before that.

I've had 4 different every-day sets in the 25 years we've been married; changed to go with the decor whenever we moved. My current set is only 5 years old but I feel like they need changing as the dinner plates have been weirdly fragile; all of them have unsightly chips on the edges. We strictly use them for the 3 of us now - if we have company I put the china on, even for casual meals. Instead of replacing the entire set, I'm keeping a lookout for open stock plates that would mix-and-match alright.

I had Pfaltzgraff for over 15 years until I replaced them with Corelle. They were still in great shape, but they were just so heavy and I wanted something lighter but just as durable.
I don't plan on replacing these any time soon.

I replaced my Corelle once since I moved out on my own about 30 years ago.

We're also coming up on our 32nd anniversary in May (the 28th). We still have the same dishes (Corelle) and the same flatware (Oneida Paul Revere) that we received as wedding presents. We have broken a dish or two and purchased replacements, but many are the originals. I don't have any real desire to replace them, and we rarely have people over, so no one else really sees them.
