How often did you call home or go home when you went off to college?

By the time I was a Sophmore I called home, maybe once a month. I only came home on the three holidays.....Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. I worked on campus during the summer months. (I went to school in another state, tho)

We have a college in our town with about 900 students and I swear most of them leave every weekend, so just wondering.:D

My DS is an hour away and he easily makes it home about once a month for $$ and laundry services!!! :jester:

Well I was a local call so I called my dad all the time just to chat. However I went home less often than my roommates and friends who lived across the country. I went home for Thanksgiving, Christmas and of course summer break my first two years and after I got a school job that kept me in a year-round dorm, I only went home for a few days at Christmas. I'd go home for the day on Thanksgiving but I didn't spend the weekend at home. I only lived at home during the summer to save myself some money.

I think I also did about once or twice a month and pretty much only came home for holidays. It was a long distance call and a 4 hour drive, so I wasn't able to keep in touch as much as I wanted. :) Now I'm in the same town and talk to them pretty much daily. :)

i didn't call home too often. i emailed occassionally. i went home for thanksgiving and winter break, and that was about it. except for the summer in between my freshman and sophomore years, i didn't go home for the summer.

when i went away to college i was not particularly close to my parents. now it seems like calling home once a week and visiting 3 times a year isn't enough. :(

I was so homesick my first year of college, I think I called my mommy every day! :teeth: I was always very close with my parents, I never even liked spending the night at other people's houses. So going away to college, especially in New York City, was tough for me at first.

My brother Jack enrolled at NYU in my sophmore year, as did my future husband, so it make things a bit more bearable for me, plus I got used to being on my own. From there out, I guess I called home once a month or so, and visited only holidays and breaks.

I lived at home

My DD goes to school 300 miles away, so she only comes home TG, Christmas and spring breaks......not even summer (we have visited her). She took classes the first summer and worked the second (she might come hoem this one though).
We "talk" on MSNMessenger whenever we catch each other.

My DS spent his first 2 years at school across the country, so he only came home for Christmas and summer.
He transfered back to this area, lived home for awhile and then got an apartment by school. He only comes over here occasionally, but I visit him every two weeks.

I went to college only about 1.5 hours from home. I went home fairly often, especially when I lived in the dorms! I'd usually alternate my time at home and my BF's (now DH) college, which was 3 hours away. I'd say I probably talked to my mom at least once a week and my dad probably once a week.

Now that I'm in law school, married, and have my "own life" now, I usually only go home for holidays and special occasions (wedding, showers, etc). My mom will come visit almost every month to go shopping, and my dad will come up every now and then. I talk to my parents once a week.

I was bad, didn't call or visit home very often when I was in College ... and that was only 35 miles away! My friends from out of State called and went home more often than I did. I knew I was really bad when my Grandmother called once to find out if I was still alive or not.

My Mom was ok with my non-communication. She got an early lesson in my independent streak when I started Kindergarten. While all the other kids were crying and hanging on to their Mommy I apparently just said "bye", turned around and headed to class. My Mom went home to cry.

I go to school about 6 hours from home and only go home during breaks. I don't think it's worth it to drive all that way for just a weekend. I talk to my mom on instant messenger almost every day though, and she calls me on the phone usually once a week.

Even though I live at home, I still have to call my mommy when I'm not in class to complain about classes or just because I'm bored and I feel like talking to her.

I went back when we still wrote letters LOL. I wrote weekly and also called several times a month. When my parents called less than a week after I got there, I thought someone had died. Long Distance rates were a bigger deal then and with three of us in college we'd all been read the riot act about calling too often. I went home for Thanksgiving,Christmas and Spring Break. I also lived at home the summer after freshman year. My other summers I visited home a few times since the National Park I worked at was less than two hours from home.

My family lives in Alabama and I attended BYU way out in UTAH...so that should tell you how often I came home! Always over Christmas break and sometimes I'd take the spring term off and come home for a few weeks.

But we spoke on the phone every Sunday. I'm the oldest of 6 children and missed my little brothers and sisters terribly...the youngest was only 3 when I started college. Needless to say my refrigerator in my apartment was covered with their letters and pictures. I hope my roommates didn't hate it too much!!

Go Cougars!!!!

I don't call my family too often, mostly due to the wonders of the internet. I usually see my dad once a week because he's in NYC every Wednesday and Thursday for work, so I get a nice dinner and sometimes a Broadway show, and some family time, which is nice. I've only been home once, (live 5 hours away) but will be home for Thanksgiving and Christmas and most of the summer most likely.

I went to college locally, but lived in an apartment with friends. I lived about 5 miles from my parents. I was very close to my mom and talked to her 3 or 4 times a week. I popped home for a visit every couple of weeks.

I lived on campus but it was only about 30 minutes away. I called home every Tuesday night and came home every weekend. No one stayed on campus unless they had to, it was a small college.

My parents were in Louisiana while I was only 8 hours away in Texas. It was required that we call twice a week. Not that we didn't want to! :) But it did set a pattern that continues to this day. I went home for all the holidays. And e-mail...wasn't invented yet. ;)
