I am going to be potentially renting points from a DVC owner in my town who isn't using their points this year. Saratoga Springs - 124 points - April 2017. What is a fair price per point to offer her?
Thanks.

You might want to see what you'd pay for the same reservation if booked thru Disney directly and use that as the ceiling. Most rentals are going for $13 - $14 per point at this time with some higher and some lower. Rental brokers are charging $14 per point.

Realize that you will not have daily housekeeping (unless you pay extra for it). The member will control the reservation until you have checked in at the resort but otherwise you will have access to all things any other guest will have when staying onsite (Magical Express, Theme Park parking, early entry, etc.)

Enjoy! :)

If it is someone who you know well then maybe they would give you a good deal and charge you $10 per point - a little savings compared to an actual rental company-- this would cover their maintenance fees on the points and give them a little extra for their time and effort.

If they are going to charge you the same as then rental companies then i would probably go through the rental company -- you can research it, but i think there is some renter protection in the form of a refund if it falls through. Probably easier to get money back from a rental company vs an acquaintance.

We will be getting a 2BR with our in laws for a trip next year. Because we would normally need only a one bedroom we are charging them the difference in points between a 1BR and 2BR -- we are only going to charge them what our maintenance fees will be for those points -- so somewhere between $6.50 and $7.00 per point.

What is the average that a rental company charged?

I believe it is between $13-14 per point. You can check out davids dvc -- they are one rental company. On their web site they have a cost calculator for the various rooms and resorts -- you just need to put in your desired travel dates. It will give you the points needed for the trip and what they would charge you. I know there are other rental companies but just not sure the names -- you can probably do a google search.

Just a note for you to consider -- trying to book an April 2017 this late in the game is risky. I wouldn't wait too much longer to make a decision as things will get booked up.

124 points at SSR in a standard view studio will give you 8 nights. Disney list for that room is $485 a night or $3880.
At $15 a point, $1,860 you're saving over $2,000.

April 2017 is pretty close in. Sometimes points are discounted if they are within three months of use. I would check David's and see if he has any last minute or distressed points available. Sometimes they are as low as $7 per point.

I think $15 is a good price for a resort that has to be booked at the 11 month booking window. $10-12 is reasonable for resorts at the 7 month window.

On the other hand, if you want a long term relationship with your local friend, don't cut it too close.

Market prices are fair. You get some benefit and protection since they're local and you'd be saving a ton over retail even if paying the same you could get elsewhere. I'd likely ask them what they wanted then go from there. They may just want to cover their dues which would be closer to $750 (roughly) on 124 points. Just be aware they likely won't be able to change or cancel once you get going so be prepared to pay the entire amount even if you can't go no matter the agreed upon price. Haggling over the price would seem inappropriate in this situation, if you're not comfortable with the offer, I'd just say no thanks and walk away.

Understand that if you are not an owner and are not getting the points transferred in to your account, they are ultimately worthless to you. The owner of the points has to make the reservation, add dining, add requests, etc. You won't be able to do any of that. So you need to find out how many points your reservation is going to require and pay the owner of the points that much.

I would ask her how much she wants for them. A fair price is anywhere from 10-14 a point depending on different situations. Her ownership costs including (prorating buy in costs) is around $8.50 a point for SSR.

$14 per point.

They pay an owner, generally $11.30 per point for a Saratoga point.

The times - they are a-changing. The main brokers are charging $15 per point now (and higher for premium resorts beyond 7 months). And in case you haven't heard, we also have a new president, and direct points will cost $200 soon!

Is there a connection between having a new President and the price Disney charges for points?
