Yikes! I keep reading about gas prices shooting up and thought I would do a quick calculation to see how much it would cost us in our SUV if gas gets up to $5/gallon.

$315 just to get there and back, not including driving around town while there.

If you google fuel cost calculator or trip cost calculator there are a few sites that you can imput your vehicle info and destination and they will give you an approx. cost. Here is one site. http://fuelcostcalculator.aaa.com/ This site gives you the average already, but some sites you can imput the cost of gallon, so you would be able to imput the $5.00.

Interesting.....

I think it will be bad.....I really do predict all sorts of things to go up.....food costs due to transportation issues, etc....

Although I do have to say that I found a plane ticket receipt from the 70s (in an old scrapbook) and the cost for the ticket was the SAME price one would pay today, in 2011 for the same flight.....air travel used to be far more costly compared to salaries/cost of living than it is today.....

Our Disney trips may be far more limited in the future.

Just imagine how much airfare will be going up too :scared1:

I am watching gas prices too. My wife and I have a three week road trip around the country planned for this summer. My gas budget appears to be going up. Fortunately we are taking a Hyundai Accent so it gets good mileage to begin with.

We just drove NY to Jacksonville for a cruise this week and you have to keep in mind that gas prices are not the same everywhere. In NJ for example it is way cheaper than on LI. We filled up to the top in NJ... And then I noticed on the GA/FL border it was cheaper too. So you really just have to do your homework - they have apps and websites that can show you where prices are cheaper. For a family of 5 driving usually still works out cheaper for us even when you factor in hotel stays/rest stops/tollls etc. Now when we find a good airfare thats a different story.

Yikes! Using today's gas prices $378 round-trip. Looks like "up to $400" might be on the low side for our budget. Still, even if it was twice that it would still be cheaper than flying 5 or 6 people :(

$5 gas would cause protests in the US similar to what's going on in the Middle East. I don't think it's going too much higher as people realize the amount of oil gathering dust at terminals all over the US and the world. Some of the increase was refiners caught off guard changing from winter blend to summer blend.

I bet we see oil drop 3-5% in the world markets this coming week as profit takers sell.

I hope our prices don't go to $5/gallon, but I believe we are looking at a real possibility.

AT $5.00 per gallon it would cost us $833 round trip to drive to WDW :scared1: What's really scary is that for our June trip we were originally going to tow our trailer down to Fort Wilderness and camp and the fuel cost for that at $5 a gallon would be $1500 roundtrip!

At $5 a gallon, it will cost approximately $640 to drive from Chicago to WDW and back :scared1:!!! Definitely hope it doesn't get that high, but that's still less than it would cost for 6 of us to fly there and rent a van.

Using current pricing, I get $456.00 r/t. That is assuming a usage of 135 gallons. So, if it goes up $1, we will be at almost $600. We flew in 2008 for around $700. :sad1:

Yikes. I am truly hoping that it will not get to $5/gal but just in case. We've already started a pre-paid debit card that will be used for gas only. That way the hit won't feel as bad. Also, you're right it still is less expensive than flying. :thumbsup2

I don't have a trip planned, and I've never driven to WDW, but I looked up the math because this thread made me curious.

It's about 525 miles from my house to one of the WDW resorts.
My car gets about 33 miles per gallon. (Honda Fit)
525 miles/33 miles per gallon= about 16 gallons x $5 = $80 one way; $160 r/t

Thankfully, when we began planning, we decided to over budget for things and our gas allotment was for up to $3.70 per gallon, of course with the hopes that gas would not rise that much. We are leaving in 2 weeks and using the chart and adding some more knowing that we are staying off-site, we expect our gas costs to be $500 round trip.
