How much walking do you normally do in a day at Disney? I've got a month to go and I'd really like to get an idea. I also want to try to estimate when I'd have to recharge my son's batteries on his wheelchair. How many hours? Thanks for any advice.

sorry I posted in the wrong spot.

I moved your post to this forum and I do believe that they will be able to assist you here......

I wore a pedometer during a WDW trip a couple of years back, and I averaged 5-6 miles day. And I tour at a relaxed pace and take midday breaks at the resort. So I'm sure some people do a lot more than that.

As a general rule most people will tend to do 6 - 10 miles per day. Just once around the World Showcase Lagoon Promenade is over 1.3 miles.

There are a few wheelchair users here who can probably give a direct answer. I know that I have no problem with a full size ECV going for more than one day on a charge. There are several people with power chairs and they all indicate not having any problem going all day, as long as they make sure that it is on the charger when back in the room.

You might want to have the batteries checked for holding % of charge prior to your trip; if the batteries are getting old or weak it might be worth investing in new ones before the trip.

If you can take the key out everytime you stop for any length of time, that will save power and there are many places that you can plug it into while in the park. My DM and I used ECV's on our last trip and took our key out every chance we could and the battery stayed at almost full power all day and we had long days. We also plugged them in when we could, when we were near an outlet, usually in the restaurants.

Hope this helps

That must me for people who do the parks the right way.:rotfl2: Not us I must do over 20 miles a day. One kid wants to do Buzz then the next wants the haunted mansion we spend the entire time going from one end back to the other. That's what I get for making them wheelchair athletes they never get tired and want to stop but I do:lmao:

Hehe, let me tell you a secret...we cheat at WDW. We spend all of our lives wheeling up and down hills and over rough sufaces. WDW is fairly level compared to most places and going across a flat surface feels like gliding to us. :thumbsup2

I do "walk" alot more miles at WDW per day then I do in my normal day since I work at a desk all day long. But except for the hills they're fairly easy miles. Plus I'm at WDW and for some reason walking around there is less tiring then heading across the parking lot going into work.

You walk untill your legs fall off.

Try hard to resist the urge to crisscross the parks. Start by going to the left, or right and work your way around the park.

If you criss cross, you will really weaar yourself out.

I walk a lot, I love Disney for exercise.

BUT, you can do less if you want. Have a plan, go in order of the attractions you want to do. Like at the Magic Kingdom - come in through Main Street, work your way around Tomorrowland. Then move on towards the Speedway, into Toontown or Fantasyland, etc. I run all over the parks, but you don't have to.

You should not have a problem with your son's power wheelchair lasting all day. You can check with the company that makes his, but I know my DD's power wheelchair has a range (the amount of distance it will go on one charge) of at least 15 miles for someone of her weight. At home, we only charge her power wheelchair when the power indicator starts to go below 1/2 and she has never run out of power.

Since there is not a key in power wheelchair to take out, the only way you can cut down on power consumption is turning it off. I would suggest you do that when he is actually stopped for any amount of time. If he has features like power tilt or height adjustment, limiting use of those would also help to decrease power needs.

If you are worried about needing to plug in, you can bring his transformer. If it's anything like the one for my DD's power chair, it's kind of big. You could rent a locker to keep it in or take it to First Aid in any of the parks to store it there (you could actually charge it for a while in First Aid if he wants to get out of the chair and stretch out on a cot or do some range of motion). There is also a link in the disABILITIES FAQs thread to a past link about where to find outlets in the parks.
