Heres the dish........

I called a local place to get my ring re-sized, was told they'd send it out and it will take a week. Didn't like that idea and I guess she could tell, so she then tells me that their other store has a jeweler on premise/schedule and gives me number so perhaps I can go in and wait for it to be sized.

I call, they say, yes, make an appointment (the whole name/address/phone) I felt like I was signing away my life :confused3 I ask the cost and she says, well, probably like $35-40, jeweler will take a look.
(going up one size)
So, I go to the place, get "buzzed in" (whats with that????):confused3 she takes the ring from me, and says, will be right back....disappears behind counter, comes back within like a minute and then says, okay, see "pete"...
Takes me to back and he proceeds to tell me what a lovely ring, quite substantial, yada yada....(meanwhile this is a band that I have not worn in about 3 years, long story short, after Chemo, post cancer and on meds I had/ve some swelling issues and many of my pieces I do not wear cause they "feel" tight :sad2: (actually I got rid of quite a bit of things and made some nice $$ ;) after learning about That on DIS) okay, Sorry :flower3: I digress...
So, I decided to take this ring and go from my ring finger to my middle finger. He goes to size me and uses a little thin wire BUT my ring is a wide band, it fits differently and I ask him if he has another ring measurer, he does. THEN tells me my ring is a 6 1/2 (it has always been and all my rings are 7!) :confused3
SO, I am like HUH, he says Yup, its a 6 1/2 and you now need an 8 for middle finger. THEN tells me it will be $125.
I think I fell on the FLOOR  $35/40 to $125???? So, I say, well, I think I will have to re-think it and of course he and the saleswoman then try and convince me that I should do it...such a beautiful ring, shame you are not wearing it (they should have seen what I dumped:rotfl2:) anyhoo,
I am annoyed as I feel like they UPcharged me when they saw the ring :confused3 AND I also think that ring is no 6 1/2 to an 8, it'd be a 7 to an 8!
I want to wear my ring and am curious, is this what I should EXPECT to be paying to re-size ??
I guess I can shop around, how crazy is that????
Sorry for long vent, I feel like it was a "bait and switch" on the pricing, UGH!

What is this ring made out of? Around here white gold costs about $75 to resize and platinum over $100. Also multiple stones will sometimes cost more.

The $40 estimate would have made me wonder if they were doing a good job or not.

The ring size I can't say much for, but I've never had a ring be off more than a 1/4 size than what I thought it was.

I prefer to use jewelers who have the goldsmith on site. I have a few in town I can use that will do that. Most of the time it takes about 1-2 weeks to get it back depending on how much work they have to do.

This is exactly why when we were ring shopping I found a place that will size it for life for free.
Can you call around and get a few more estimates?

I think it depends on what the ring is made of, and the stones it has in it (if it has any). My engagement ring is white gold with a big diamond and six little tiny diamonds. It cost $170 to resize!!! They said that if it had been platinum, it would have been over $200! I pray my fingers never change size, don't want to pay again!

Actually considering gold is around $1000/ounce right now, that is a really good price.

Precious metals are very expensive right now. Take it elsewhere to a jeweler and get another quote. If the band is thick I can see how it could cost what was quoted. If it is actually a size and a half that price is reasonable even for 14kt.

Okay, maybe I am wrong about the pricing being high? :confused3

Its 14K shank and the top of band is all *set diamonds (I thought they were pave, LOL) and about 1/2" wide. There are no stones near bottom.
Should I be worried about them getting loose??? Never even thought about that before...

Sizing UP, adding metal, is going to cost more than sizing a ring down. However, I do not know how much they charge. Perhaps, wear the ring on a chain around your neck?

If its done properly and the stones dont go all the way around the diamonds should not be an issue. The shank is cut down the center in the back and gold is added. You would be paying for actual gold and labor so the price quoted isn't terrible. But, I dont like that the band is thick and they tried sizing with a thin band sizer. Why did YOU have to correct them?

If you have a local mall with Sears, or Barclay they usually employ on-site jewelers. It wont cost you a cent to get a quote.

My husbands best friend is a jeweler in the diamond district in NYC. I will ask him what he thinks. :)

Did they put the ring on a mandrel to size it as well as size your finger?

He said if the belly of the stones dont stick through the band you should be OK. Look inside the ring and run your finger over the back of the stones inside the ring. If you dont feel them stick past the gold sizing should easy and the stones wont be compromised.

The whole set up sounds creepy. I would get your ring done elsewhere.

If the band is solid, it shouldn't cost that much. But if you have stuff going on in the ring, it might cost a bit more. $100+ seems too high. ButI haven't had a resizing in a couple of years.

This sounds totally fishy.

Thank God for my jeweler. He is fixing my grandmothers wedding set with platinum, adding a 3 replacement diamonds (.3 carat total, .5 at absolutel worst), going up a size and "padding" the bands so they are so thin for $500 at the absolutel worst case scenerio, and he said that is if I did a TERRIBLE job describing them to him, but he doesn't think it will be more than $300, and that is same day while I wait in his shop.
I had no idea sizing rings were so expensive!

With alot of stones like you are describing, whenever you open a ring up like that, it can loosen stones. The prongs or setting can move and they will need to tighten the stones and they might have added that into the estimate. I worked for a jeweler that work was sent out to for 3 years. They are not shady as everyone likes to believe. It's just hard to get all that work done properly in a store with all the proper equipment.

I paid 75 dollars last year for a simple 14k gemstone ring to be sized up. Stupid weight gain!!!

That is actually a REALLY good deal.. I had a ring resized about 2 years ago and it was probably double what you were quoted.

Try Zales if you have one around you. That's who I deal with and normally it's only like $25-$35! I would not pay $125 for a sizing

I had three rings re-shanked and re-sized. Different styles and settings. They didn't cost me more then $45 a piece. However I used a jeweler I've had for over 23yrs and it was about 3yrs ago before gold prices shot through the roof. Still $125 seems pretty high to go up one size. I'd steer clear of any jeweler that doesn't know how to properly size a ring and would give quotes over the phone on a piece he's never seen before. I'd also give chain stores a wide berth as well.

I think it sounds pretty fishy too. Did the saleswoman even address the huge price difference? Apologize for the error? Weird. I don't think I could trust a place that quotes such vastly different prices like that. It sounds really off.

I would go to several places and price it out. But I wouldn't go with them.

Mine cost around $200 to resize. It has a bunch of channel set diamonds (white gold)...most jewelers refused to even try to do it. I found this little local jeweler and he did a great job...but I didn't not expect the price

The jeweler we buy all of my jewelry from would size it for free for me. But he has gotten a lot of business from us, too.
