How much should a natural gas furnace cost?

It looks like we will have to replace our 22 year old natural gas furnace for a high efficiency one. What is a fair price in Small town, northern Ontario? Our home is large but not huge, basement and first floor ranch style.

I am in Toronto so prices are likely a little different (House is about small-ish bungalow with a finished basement; will give you an idea of ballpark, maybe?). New furnace this year cost us ~$4000+tax. We were upgrading from a 25+ y/o furnace.

We just did the same. Upgraded a 30 year furnace, not a larger house either. $4000 all in. We also filled out paperwork for a $250 rebate...still waiting for that. We are southwestern Ontario, 1 hour outside of GTA.

My brother is an HVAC mechanic and a new HE furnace will cost between $4000-$10,000 depending on the modifications that are required to transition from the old to the new. It also depends on the quality of the furnace that you purchase.

I had my furnace replaced a couple of years ago and a lot of sheet metal work was required. My old furnace was 30 years old. Since my brother did it for me I only had to pay the wholesale cost of the equipment/materials, I selected a mid level quality unit. It still cost $2800, a turkey dinner and a case of beer. It took approx. 7 hours to install plus some prep work the day before. So I would say that if you can get it done for $4000 you're doing really well.

As long you dont need a new AC and the ductwork is good you should be able to get a high efficiency for 4-5k. We used a national company that uses local contractors.

We just got a few different quotes and they were all in the 4-5K range, the higher quality furnace you get the more rebates they have, but then your overall price is more as well.
