Just curious if we are the only ones getting pomeled with book rental for school this year..... $239, $200 and $100. :mad:Let alone the one who is $239 will be gone half of the day at internship (going to work instead of classes, for those who don't know) Anyone else got crazy ones??

Book rental?! We only pay if our books are damaged by us, or lost. Then they collect.

ARE YOU KIDDING!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Well, Indiana is surely crappy!!!

What about Florida people?? We are planning on moving... do they have to pay, also??

Well, I guess that's one benefit of the high taxes we pay in New Jersey. We don't pay book rental fees. For that much money, you should get to keep the books.

Is this for elementary, middle, or high school??

Here in Penna. we do not have any book fees at all. We also do not have to buy school supplies - other than pencils and notebooks, and occasionally a calculator for advanced high school math classes.

Nope not kidding. We also have one of the worst education funding systems in the country. But aside from basic school supplies (paper, pencils, calculators, binder, etc) we don't pay for anything. We sometimes have to share books though if there's not enough to go around.

Here in Central Illinois we will be paying $247 for DD who is a junior in PUBLIC high school and $165 for each of the three in Catholic Grade School. This ONLY pays for books....by the time we get year books, student ID (mandatory for the high school) and school supplies it will take approximately $1000 to get them in the door. That does NOT include shoes, uniforms, clothes, or tuition! I don't mind paying the book fee for the private school- but the public school fees are ridiculously high, especially since many of the AP/honors courses/orchestra/choir stuff has been cut this year! We also have to pay for DD to participate in what orchestra there is left. But, the football players don't pay any fees- go figure!

two for high school and one for elementary.

Wow, this is the first time I have ever heard of anyone having to pay or rent for books in school other than if the kids lose them or damage them. We don't pay for grade school, Jr High or Senior high!

Way down here in Southern Illinois we will be paying
$20 for our high school freshman and $15 for our second grader. We also have to buy a list of school supplies but the list isn't too bad, maybe $40 each.

I live in Southeast Florida and we don't pay anything for books...
We only get a small list of supplies that we have to buy (paper, folders, etc...)

I grew up in New Jersey and we didn't pay there either...

welcome to Indiana  I can't complain because mine are much less than yours. grade 3 is $100 and grade 8 is $125 plus the cost of school supplies which will be about $50 for each kid. We pay for everything they do. If they are in band in HS you have band fees, if you are in sports you pay for supplies and plus you pay for any field trips they go on.

For those of you who pay book fees....exactly what would happen if the family happens to be low income and can't afford it? I remember some kids never went on field trips when I was younger because their parents couldn't afford them...and that was back when the most you paid was 15-20.00 per trip max....now in the Jr High they go on a trip to Boston that is 200 and in high school they have their Disney World trip that I think was just under 600.00 per kid and next year the 10th graders are goign to Italy which will be at least as much as the Disney trip.

No book rental fees in North Carolina either. We do have a $6
"supply fee," which is apparently optional since only about 70% of students pay it. Unfortunately, the schools with lots of parent involvement and PTO fund-raising are also the ones that collect most of these fees. Some high school classes (art, lab classes, for example) also have fees in the $5 range -- I suspect they also are optional.

We do buy our own children's supplies here. At the elementary level, we are asked to contribute Kleenex, handsoap, etc., to the classroom, but I'm sure that's optional. Most of our teachers have a "wish list" in the classroom at "Meet the Teacher" day (today, for my 5th grader!) -- I always take a couple of things from it.

We don't have to pay for our kids books here either, at least not until they loose them or damage them. Half the time they don't have enough books to go around.

I am also curious, what do they do for low income families who can not afford that crazy rental fee?

I did have a pretty big supply list though for DS who just started 1st grade.
