What should I expect to pay for my 2 DD's for the headband style cornrows? Should I pay by the head or each braid or what? Give me the minimum/maximum so I'll have some idea and won't get overcharged.
Thanks!

On St. Thomas my DD 6 had her hair done and if I remember correctly we paid $1 per braid. I followed some suggestions that I saw on these boards:
1- Tell them the price you'll pay up front and if they say no move on to the next person (trust me, there are many of these ladies to be found!)
2- Tell them the maximum number of braids you want: I said 8, got 10 but at least they didn't try to squeeze 20 braids onto her head.

If they do a good job, pay them a little more but at least you don't feel like you go into it with no idea how much you'll end up paying. As we were paying and the lady was counting the braids the other customer next to me asked if she could pay that amount too and her braider just laughed and said "No, you said $2 each." These ladies aren't dumb and will charge you whatever you let them charge you.

Be sure to put sunscreen on your daughter's head between each row. We saw lots of little sunburnt heads. If your daughter has a tender head, rethink the number of braids you might get. From what I saw and heard it can be painful because they have to pull the hair so tightly.

Don't get them done on the ship... or castaway cay. When we left the ship they were there, offering to do it. Set up and everything.. at port of call. However... if you say no.. and keep walking.. others will approach you with even better deals. Then.. you can get it done much cheaper.. and tip the actual person who is doing it.. more if you like.

Why not on the ship? Did you feel it was clean at the port hairbraiding places? I was planning to get it done on the ship, as not to waste our Castaway Cay day, and after reading some posts saying they worried about lice, etc.. at Nassau, but then I've read where it can totally book up on the ship and lines are huge. I'd be willing to do it at Nassau if I felt it was clean and they take care not to damage the hair.
Thanks

Actually... I should clarify. When I spoke to the people who got them done... it was their recommendation ... not mine. The ship and Castaway Cay was expensive (to them). And Nassau.. as soon as you got off the ship was cheaper. But the people away from the ship... they sang their praises. It was there that got the best reviews for price. Those that could afford more.. gave more.. and the person who was braiding their hair.. who really needed the money.. and could keep the extra.. they got the money they needed. Not some boss. From what I was told.. (I can't verify it)... the ladies who were at Nassau .. in the bunch just off the ship... they worked for someone else. They couldn't keep much of it.

So.. to clarify... if money is no object.. go whereever. If money is no object, and you'd like to help those people who are very poor.. go to the shops on Bay street in Nassau. There are many who will braid it for less.. you can give the extra to them. For those who money IS an object.. same thing.

My daughters (ages 9,7,and 5) and I had our hair braided at St. Maarten on the beach. We wook our own combs ans hair scrunchies for them to use while braiding our entire heads. They were very clean and fast.....finished in less than 2 hours.

The ship was booked up by noon the first day so that wasn't an option. I didn't want to do ours at Castaway Cay becuase I didn't want to miss out on any time playing at the beach.

We did put sunscreen between our cornrows, and we wore gilligan type hats at the beaches.

We love our hair......our hairdos looked great for the tropical night!!! We still have the braids in out hair...and they look great!!!

I would personally recommend the ship. My daughters weren't sure about cornrows, so on the ship we had the box braids done. They were $1 per braid and for my two girls it was under $20. (They only got rows done, like three or four each side). Then when we were at Coki beach, my oldest had cornrows done. The braider wouldn't give my youngest cornrows and did more of the box braids. This was about $50 for both. IMHO, I just felt that the braiders on the ship were cleaner and did a better job. I would have rather have paid the $2 per cornrow for the quality. The ship uses rubberbands, the Coki beach braider used foil. Their braids were only in for less than 1 week. I was expecting alot longer from reading previous postings. We went on the 7 day, so there were 3 opportunities to get braids done (days at sea). We really lucked out because we walked up to the Goofy pool around 9:00 am and saw someone getting their hair done. Asked if we could sign up, got the first appt at 10:00 am with Carla. So....hope this helps!:)

My DD will be 5 at cruise time. I know that she will want the braids. She has very fine and very thin hair. Anyone have any recommendations on the type of braids to get for her. I know what a cornrow is, but you got me on the "box" and "head band style' terms. Can someone elaborate?

Thanks!

The box braiding is just like it sounds. They take a comb and make a small box and then braid that. They are done evenly and look really cute. The headband style is cornrows. They are braids that are tightly done from the scalp. You can continue the braid or just have beads put in to have a true "headband". As far as recommendations for your dd5, ask the braider. I would think though, that the box braids might be better.:)

My 5 year old daughter had her whole head braided with the box braids....47 in all. Her hairdo looks precious, and it has stayed very well.....she is so proud of it!!! She has very fine hair too, but the lady did a great job...we had ours done in St. Maarten. I asked them not to do their too tight, and they didn't. None of them have had any headaches or even complained that hte braids were too tight.

I have a question - my hair is pretty curly and tangles easily, so it can be tough to braid. Also, if it is combed or brushed when it's dry it frizzes out and turns into a little afro. :p If I came with damp hair that wasn't tangled, could they do the headband braids on my kind of hair?
