Hello, we are looking at buying into DVC. Our family is 6 and we would be going to Disney between the months of November to May for at least a week each visit.
How many points should i be looking at buying?
Thanks in advance

I would suggest 300 to 400. This is assuming a 1bdrm at least.

With six, I assume you'll want a two bedroom, since a one bedroom really only sleeps four plus a small crib. (Two studios would work but they're never side by side.) I'd suggest you spend some time with the points charts (see the button above) and see what some sample vacations would require. There's a significant difference in point requirements between late December and January. Run a few different scenarios and you'll soon get an idea on what you require.

If you look at the top of this page, you'll see a link for "DVC Point Charts" you'll be able to look at how many points are needed for the different dates at the different resorts. If you are a family of 6, you will most likely need a 2BR. You can read about the occupancy rules on the occupancy thread.

I am also considering DVC with a large family. What I notice is that the weekend points is double the weekday. So if you stay at an offsite resort for the weekend you will not need to use as many points. The only issue with this is that during off season the parks close early during the week and late night events like the MK Electric Light Parade tend to occur Friday, Saturday nites.

I am thinking of getting in with the 160 points. If we go every other year we will have double the points to use and the annual fee will be less.

I like to split at least a couple of days at one of the Universal Resorts or hit a beach resort on the coast.

Any idea what is the minimum number of points if you want to add on later?

We usually stay Sunday through Friday nights and check out on Saturday's. This is a 6 night/7day stay - just shy of a full week, but saves those Saturday night points. We have also stayed/paid cash for a Saturday check in at a value resort and then moved to our DVC resort for Sunday check in through Friday night, thereby having a full 7 nights and again saving the points for Sat. night.

However, looking at the points charts, and randomly choosing November - before Thanksgiving, in a 2 bedroom AKV Standard (pool, I think) view room, it costs 227 points for a full week, a Savannah view is 295. For a full week in January in a 2 bedroom Standard is 213 points, Savannah view is 270 points. December trips are split between 3 "seasons" depending on when in December you'd visit. Feb and Mar are also split depending on what weeks, April is "magic season" for 08, and split for 09, so you'd really have to look at the points charts. May is somewhere between 249 and 315 points in a 2 bedroom.

Personally I go with a buy in of 250-300 points depending on my personal finances and take it from there. Again, knocking out that Saturday night stay can make a huge difference. Good luck with your decision and happy planning.
