How many times do you call if there's no answering machine?

I've been trying to RSVP to a birthday party invitation that the kids received. I've called four or five times and just get a ringing phone - no machine. I don't want them to think I didn't RSVP, but how many times do you have to try if the people don't have a machine?

I don't understand why younger people wouldn't have a machine. What if your child gets sick or injured at school, or if someone calls to set up a job interview, or the doctor's office calls with the results of your test? Everyone is not just going to keep calling back. So why wouldn't people want an answering machine? They're not expensive. My parents didn't have a machine for years until my grandmother's nursing home insisted that they get one. My mother said she didn't need one, but I've noticed that they haven't disconnected it since my grandmother died.

Anyway, my question really is - how many times do you try before you give up when there's no answering machine?

maybe they have call waiting/caller id that just rings instead of giving you a busy signal. I know thats what happens when we have people call our house and we are on the phone. If they have several kids the phone could be tied up for hours and my kids never answer when they are talking to someone. It drives me crazy. Good luck

I'd call late at night or earlier in the AM (Say 9 AM or 9 pm).

If all else fails, write an RSVP and mail it!

LOL - I guess they don't need to confirm a # of children for the party in any case...I can't even imagine not having an answering machine, but maybe they're having phone problems.

I keep calling until my finger cramps;)

Maybe they are on the internet. That would cause the phone to just ring and ring.

Good luck!

I know that when we used to have Call waiting and If I was online it would just ring and ring. I finally remembered how to disable call waiting while I was online but it took me awhile and I know my computer pretty well.

you should have had this..then you don't miss calls while online...catch a call

Thanks for the info on call waiting. I don't have and just assumed it was like voice mail. You know if you're on a call at work and don't take an incoming call, it just goes into voice mail. I've called at different times of the day. Guess I'll just keep trying. I've got to get through one of these times.

Thanks for the tip but at time I looked into this type of thing and it was to pricy or wouldn't work with our phone co.

It's no longer an issue.

We moved 3 weeks ago and I haven't hooked up the answering machine yet. I'm kind of enjoying it--my family knows that if I don't answer the phone at home, just call the cell. It's kind of liberating and I don't have an inbox full of calls from solicitors. I may just never hook it up again!

We don't have an answering machine either. We do have caller id and a cell, though. Reminds me, though. I have to RSVP for a kids party this weekend, too.
