Just a quick question. We will be going in Jan of 2006. With our friend, Julia who has never been. We are there 8days, 7 nights. We are planning to go to Kennedy Space Center one day. How Many choices should each person get? The ages of the travellers will be 32,31,29, 4 1/2 and 2. We are also planning to do breakfast in our rooms most days. I am thinking more in terms of character meals, special resteraunts etc.

You need to book dining plans for length of stay. So if you don't want a sit down meal each day, you shouldn't book a meal plan at all

Currently with MYW you would each get 7 sit down/counter/snack meals per person to use each day. (The meals are figured by nights of stay, not days. This is due to check in not until 4:00 p.m. or later, and check out is by 11 a.m.)
Although you could each double up a few days worth of sit downs and eat at a signature restaurant, such as Le Cellier.
I have not heard of a guest being able to select a set number of days. (Example: 4 out of a 7 night stay)

Let me re-explain myself. I meant a special meal like character breakfast/dinner etc. We are not going to do the dining option(I don't think) SO how many special meals should each person choose.

Oh, well, that is a different question.

Personally, I do one character meal per trip....others like to do more. We might do two next time because I might book the Princess Storybook for my daughter.

Then, I think it really depends on your budget. How doable is it going to be if everyone picks two, and the choices are HoopDeeDo, California Grill, Jiko, Flying Fish, V&As, etc? And if everyone is interested in picking (my MIL said "you pick, its overwhelming"). Each grown up picking one puts you at three special meals - two, six. Each person could also pick "one special thing (Cirque?, your four year old might like the pirate cruise) and then you could all choose moderate meals.

Unless you are talking New Year's Day I don't think you'll have problems with finding places to get a p.s. at. On our first trip I p.s.'ed us to death. We ate at many nice places but spent more money than we needed to because there were some meals that we really weren't all that hungry but I felt obligated since we had a p.s. I have learned since and here's my theory. Make the p.s that you all really want so you know you won't be turned away. Also don't feel like you HAVE to keep it if you don't want to unless it is a cc required p.s. and even if not I usually call to cancel although Disney dining acts like I'm nuts for cancelling but it's just me - I'd rather let someone else have the p.s if I know we don't want to keep it. You may get a "hankering" (or a craving for if you aren't familiar with my southern language) for something and by all means call when you're there. At peak times it is important to have your meals lined up. Non-peak (in my humble opinion) you have much more room for flexibility. So, I don't think there's a "certain number" of p.s. you are looking for. Just look over the menus with all involved, get their input, and go from there and you will do fine!!!
