trying to figure out how many memory cards and what kind i should get...so how many cards do you take if you use digital, what kind and even f you are still a "film"buff like i have been, how many pics do you take a day? i'd like to have enough memory to not have to down load ( since at $13 for 120 pics to a cd , i might as well buy another card or 2). my usual vacation would probably be around 250 - 360 pics about i am thinking? does that sound about right? ( foggy memory and last time i took way fewer than normal but will probably take more than normal as it's grandbaby's first trip)

related question..is there any place you can connect with out a lap top to down load pics to your home computer? if so how much for how long...we'll be at csr.

thanks

We went for 6 days in January for our kids (2 and 4) first trip and we took about 1600 pictures. We brought a laptop to download pics each night. I am not sure of another option, sorry.

We bought a 1G card and don't worry about how many pictures we take. They go on sale at Office Max. Wal-Mart also has a pretty good price.

Have a great trip!!

Between three of us we took over 1200 pictures in 5 days. I downloaded to a laptop daily. I would rather delete 100 bad pictures then come and say "Why didn't we take more pictures!"
Remember to hand your camera to the Photopass photographers and they will gladly take pictures of you and your family.
Here is an example of them using our camera;

The first time we went to WDW I took 500 pictures in 4 days. The next time we went for 5 days and took 650. This past March we went but had to hold off for WDW :sad1: till Feb.2007 or March 2007 and we instead just visited Florida and BG and we took 340 in 1 week. I guess you could say I love taking photos. When we get home I down load them onto the computer and start deleting the ones I don't like. Usually most are kept. I always bring two cards for the digital just in case I run out.

:wizard: the magic and the ::MickeyMo and our family will soon be together again.... 2007

So I'm a bit obsessive but I would fill 2 1GB memory cards each day. I purchased a laptop just to take so that I could download each night. I don't even know how many total pictures I took but it was well over 1500 maybe even 2000 in 8 days!

Mom says that every moment of every day was captured on film... I can't argue with her becuase it really is true!

WOW. There's some picture takin fools on this forum... I thought I took a lot of pictures when I took around 150 over 4 days. For me (and everybody's different) if I'm spending a lot of time worrying about taking pictures of EVERYTHING I feel like I'm missing everything... Does anybody else feel this way??

That said - I take a 1GB card and that's enough for me for a 7 day vacation without having to worry about bringing a computer on vacation, and with my 6.0 mp camera set to the highest possible resolution.

I'm the type of person that likes to pack light - so for me I buy the smallest possible camera while not sacrificing picture quality. This way I can carry the camera in my front pocket (without a case) and grab it real quick and get that candid hard to get picture. I don't like to have to worry about changing memory or batteries constantly.

Also, I like a big display screen on my camera so it's easy to tell whether a picture turned out good or not. This way I can get rid of half the pictures that don't turn out for whatever reason. This saves a lot of time when you go to upload the pictures on your computer and it saves room on your memory card as well...

Awesome tip MOmousefan... I never would have thought of that - I'm always looking for someone to take the whole family picture, and it sucks having to stop someone and ask them to take your picture... thanks for the tip.

if you're a person who takes lots of pics but doesn't have a laptop, another option to go is to get a portable storage unit.

These are units with hard drives where you can download straight from the memory card without a PC. They usually handle CF, SD, MMC, Memory Sticks, Xd cards among others. It's usually run on rechargeable batteries, and typically will have 20GB or more storage capacity.

If you check out http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/ and click on the link to the portable storage units, you can see the many varieties of them. Some just do card backups, some double as an mp3 player, some triple as a video player as well. It's a little bit of an investment up-front but it saves you from bringing tons of cards and having the chance of it lost, ruined, etc etc.

I have 2 vosonic units, one with 40GB and one with 80GB and I love mine. I only have 2 256MB memory cards, and when one is full, I just dump it right into my unit. It only takes less than 5 minutes and I have a complete backup so I can clear out my memory card and just keep on going. Mine uses a standard laptop hard-drive, so if 80GB isn't enough anymore, I can just buy a bigger hard drive and keep on going.

great idea, never even heard of it before but will check it out :teeth:

My dad filled up 5 16MB memory cards in 7 days (but we took some video as well; fireworks, etc.). Meanwhile, I used about 25 rolls of 35mm film and took over 600 pictures. Maybe a bit much on my end, but if I'd had more film, I would've taken more. :rotfl: I try and allow 1 roll for each parade and fireworks show. And another roll for the safari at AK. The rest is everything from the resort to characters to shows to ride signs. I usually burn through about 4 rolls per day; always less at MGM though. I need to hurry up and get my film developed, come to think of it. That's going to be one massive check written to Wal-Mart. :lmao:

so anyone care to guess the ratio of how many digital they take now vs film pic they took before?.in other words, did those who take 1000+ also take 1000+ when they used a film camera? ..ie do you find yourself taking more ( this could be me since i don't have to pay to get them developed , cheap cheap cheap) or less because of deleting the ones that were less than great?

and my husband wants to know how you take 3000 and still have time to do anything else :) :) :) probably because he thinks of how anytime we go anywhere i have a tendency to yell "stop the car i want to take a picture of that" which can add a few hrs to travel time :lmao: and he's afraid that will translate to "wait just a min before we ride potc/ms/rnr /etc, i want to take a pic of that!". poor guy, 30 yrs with me have taught him patience if nothing else :rotfl2:

we took almost 4000 pics during christmas at WDW last year for 11 days. we took 2 memory cards and used this click here and it holds 20 gigs of pics. DW loved it. we use it everywhere we go when we are taking lots of pics. i hope this helps

is it small enough to fit in the room safe? Thanks

Another option is to buy one of the iPods that you can download pictures to (the model one down from the video iPod, although I'm sure the video iPod will work too if you want to spring the extra bucks). You can buy an accessory called a "camera connector" that allows you to hook up your camera to the iPod, download the pics just like you would to a laptop computer, and then when you get home you can transfer them to your regular computer!

We bought our iPod before our last Disneyland trip and it worked great! No more dragging a laptop with us on vacation :thumbsup2 Also, if you like music you're buying something that has multiple uses and won't just get thrown in the drawer when you don't need it for picture downloading.

The other great thing about the iPod idea is that you're pretty much guaranteed it will fit into whatever size safe the hotel room has.

I usually take 80-100 pictures per day (we DEFINITELY take more pics now than before our digital camera ::yes:: ), and I like to only take the super high quality pics, so with that means I generally blow through a 256MB memory card in a single day. Having something to download to each night is a must!

(one note, the camera connector on the iPod isn't supported for every single brand of digital camera, although it covers a lot of them. Make sure to research that your camera is supported before purchasing)

I plan on taking two memory cards that will hold about 75 pictures each plus two rolls of regular 35 mm film and one water camera. That will probably add up to be about 225 pictures, and I doubt I will use them all for our 7 day trip. I love pictures, but I don't want to feel like my whole vacation is spent taking them. Plus with only DH and I it is hard to get pictures together, but thanks to the great tip on this thread maybe we can get more together than I thought! Yay, photopass photographers!

I took an average of about 100 pictures per day on our last trip, but a lot of those were multiples of the same scene, trying to get the best possible pic. The majority of them were trying to capture just how much fun the kids were having :) I don't think it eats into my enjoyment of the trip, because I keep the camera on 'automatic' mode so it's all very quick and easy, and it's so much fun sorting through the pics afterward.

I borrowed a laptop and downloaded them each night, since my memory card had a max of around 200 pics, and that worked really well. I expect we'll do it that way again this time.

And yes, I take *many* more pics with a digicam than I ever did with a film camera! Absolutely! But I get more good pictures, too, since I can see right away whether my pic is turning out and take another one if it didn't work as desired :) And I only print the best ones, and we do that online very cheaply, so it does work out to be cheaper than film for us.

this sounds even better...any problems with picture quality ( presuming you download again when you get home to the computer) and about how many it holds? i was thinking of getting husband an ipod for our anninversary anyway.i'm wondering now if a 1 g card is big enough or not. doesn't sound like it unless i plan on down loading to something else every night

No problems with picture quality, the iPods that do this essentially have a hard drive in them just like a computer (you can save anything to it including computer files, etc.). This means that you're saving the picture in the same format/size/etc. that you would if you were saving to a regular computer.

As far as space, we bought the iPod that has 20GB of room. They also sell 40GB and 60GB sizes. This space includes everything, so I guess it's possible if you have lots (and I mean LOTS) of music on it you could potentially run out of room for many pictures, but seriously 20GB is a heck of a lot of space (our home computer only has a total of 40GB!). :teeth:
