You may want to try "advanced mode" navigation to get your characters to meet up. I usually choose some part of Main Street USA. If you check off the advanced mode box on the map screen, you will be given a list of the various instances for the room you want to enter. Have both characters choose the same one (such as Main Street East North East) - and voila! you will be in the same room. Then I make my mule my friend so my mule can follow me to one of my rooms to trade without the extra chatter going on around them.
