I recently read a few threads that said you only need 2 and wanted to see what everyone says and I still don't understand exactly how rider switch works?

There are 4 of us 2 adults dd5 ds3 he is not tall enough to ride a few rides. So let's say dd5 and dh go on the ride using the fast pass. Do we go in the fast pass line all 4 of us? Do we need a fast pass for the 3 of us but not ds3 who cannot ride, or just 2? Where do we wait and then where do we go after with the second adult and child!

I'm on my phone right now but there is a thread where I asked about child swap less then a week ago and got done great info. You might try the search for it. The info I got is whoever is riding then needs a FP- whoever is left doesn't need one and can wait anywhere with the younger kids. It sounds like all the rides except RSR don't even need to see the younger child, the ones going on the ride simply ask for the pass. Those waiting to rude and the younger child go not need to wait in line. The child swap pass is good for 3 people anytime that same day.

In your case, you can probably get by with only two FPs. Let's say DH and DD5 are going to ride RSR first, while you wait with DS3. The whole group needs to go to the attraction entrance.* The CM will then give you DH (or DD5) a tag to take with them to the CM further down the ride line. DH and DD5 will enter the line and you and DS3 will be able to do something else (they usually will not let a child that does not meet the height requirement enter the line). DH and DD5 will give the tag to the CM further down the line and get the actual Rider Swap pass. After they finish, they'll meet back up with you. Then you can take the Rider Swap pass, plus two others (in your case, probably just DD5), back to the attraction. At that point, it's treated like a FP. Then you (and DD5) can ride the attraction, while DH remains with DS3.

*The CMs at RSR asked to see the child every time I did Rider Swap back in November. Technically, they can ask to see the child that does not qualify at any attraction with a height requirement before issuing the Rider Swap tag. So I would be prepared for that.

You only need 2 FPs. So you could get 2 each for 2 different rides and rider swap. If your daughter isn't going to ride twice you could also use single rider where it's available. On some rides it can be faster, like Indy and RSR depending on the FP return queue length. Here is the recent thread.
