How many DVC Add-On Buyers say “If I get this next Contract, I’ll sell an existing Contract to pay for it?

Who's Said: If I get this one, I’ll sell another Contract (or Rent the Extra Points) to pay for it?

  • I Never said that.

  • I said that, but then kept both Contracts and all the Points.

  • I said that, and actually sold one of my existing Contracts, or rented out the extra points.

  • I’m confused, but wanted to participate in the Survey.

We said we would but we stayed in a 1 bedroom for the first time after buying the second contract but before selling our first……..my wife wouldn’t let me sell it after

I have sold contracts for new ones, but in honesty I spent more on the add-on than sold to replace.

We snagged 200 Direct VGC points in January and sold our 27 & 35pt VGC resale, as well as the 150pt SSR points we had, to help defray the cost.

We bought another 153pts at RIV (fixed week 46 - Last week of F/W most years, Thanksgiving some years), and sold 125pt at HHI to help defeay buy-in cost but also to reduce annual dues. Currently debating if we might sell 1 or 2 of our small RIV contracts to cover as well, or if we will just keep it all. We don’t stay at RIV often but it’s great for Epcot Festivals.

I have a little buyers remorse at the last, if only because we are now considering PIT (and will absolutely buy Reflections if it is built!), but it’s really a matter of figuring out what contracts I might sell to pick up PIT, if I decide to (I might just pick up a small resale and settle for enough points for 2 nights bungalow over NYE with banking and borrowing instead of 3 nights. It’s a bucket wish list. Or maybe I just figure out when we are going to do it and purchase transferred points from another owner). If the incentives are right, I might even sell our resale points to pick up all direct. We really enjoyed the Members Cruises and Members First Looks Cruises, so we want enough direct points to take advantage of those offerings when we want.

I'm an extremely aggressive negotiator. I plan to buy at $80, strip three years of points, and sell at $90.
Have you considered transferring in AUL points instead? Eliminates the headache of buy/sell/tax.

Transferring in would cost me at least $18 pp. The transaction I'm working on would work out to about half that.

Is there a buy sell tax if there’s no profit?
Hawaii withholds tax when you sell as if there's a profit. You get it back but it's an extra hoop to jump through.

I’ve seen posts for $17-17.50pp which is still more than $10.
Once you factor in your time, commission, closing costs, HARPTA paperwork, dues on points used for stripping the contract, and depending on market price when you’re ready to sell in 2026, you could definitely come out ahead.
For a one time trip, I would prefer to have a 3 way call and transfer points in. Who knows, you may fall in love with Aulani and keep the contract!

I factored all of those things into my analysis. To your point, there's still the added dimension of my hassle but I enjoy the buying and selling process.

Oh I've been to Aulani three times and I very much expect that my wife will have to pry the contract out of my hands kicking and screaming.
