How many days?

I'm in the preliminary stages of planning a possible trip to DL next fall. This would most likely be my only visit. I'll be in the area for a family event. How many days would you plan?
Any additional advice?

Really depends on how many days you have available and if you want to be sure you do everything. You could squeeze everything into 2 days and be done, but if you're able to go 4 days, 2 in each park, you can relax a bit and have more opportunities to see shows etc.

When we went last August, we did 3 days, 2 in 1 and 1 in the other, and felt like I could have used 1 more in the other. We're looking at going back this summer, but only doing 1 day in each though.

3 days is our typical Disneyland trip in the park. However if it's your only trip, and you haven't been there lately, I would say 4 days.

I am a long time pass holder. I’m thinking 3 for 2 adults, but if you have little 4!

2 adults. One ( me ) has never been the other was once several decades ago. No children

If you think this will be your only trip, I'd do a minimum of 3 full days (two Disneyland and 1 DCA). You could also probably add a fourth partial day easily depending on when you arrive/depart.

We used to do 3 days and then started upping to 4 days and still did not do everything we wanted to do. It is a better trip to go slow and easy and enjoy the atmosphere and little details. 4 - 5 days works really well.

If I'm going to fly 6 hours to a place, I'm spending a week there, minimum.

I can appreciate that, but as I said, I'm flying from the east coast for a family event and tacking DL on since I'll be in CA for the first time in my life.

It if it's your first/only visit, 4-5 days should give you time to do everything you want to do (rides/shows/food/shopping) with some time to re-do some favorites or give yourself a cushion if a ride is down for a day or part of a day.

I wasn't disagreeing with you.

I'm saying I'd spend a week.

If your time and budget affords it and if it’s your only visit ever, get a 5 day park hopper ticket. Don’t stay on site. Stay at a hotel on Harbor Blvd and pocket the difference. We did a trip like that a few year ago. It was wonderful.

Minimum two days. One day at DL one at DCA, possibly park hop at night to DL on DCA day (small park if planned right can be done by 5pm).
I recommend at least 3 Days. One day at DL, one Day at DCA, Third day, park hop between parks and experience your favorites.

I usually recommend 3 days with 2 days of Disneyland start and one day of California Adventure start. Many people will be tired from all the walking and not fully maximize their time if going more days than that. If you aren't too concerned about the extra time and money for tickets, 4 days would allow you to take things at a slower pace.
