How many cats is too many?

My DW and I have 4 cats:
9 year old Persian, Princess(f)
5 year old Tabby, Basil (m)
4 year old Maine Coon, Sasha (f)
5 mo. old Maine Coone Siamese mix, Maya (f)
All 4 were rescued from an otherwise bleak life (including the Persian ... her previous owners locked her in a dark basement all day without food and water)

My family thinks we are nuts. We have a large house with plenty of space for them, what do you think ... are we nuts?

P.S. One cat was named after a Disney Character ... know which one?

One. :rotfl: Sorry we are a dog family- allergic to cats.

I think its more of a QUALITY answer than a QUANTITY answer.

If a house stinks or is filthy with fur & feces, then that's too many.

So, no more than they can keep up with. And by keep up, I mean vet appts & bills, proper diet, love & clean healthy environment for humans & animals to live in.

Speaking from someone who has 4 I wouldn't say that 4 are to many. I wouldn't give any of them up for anything in this world!

What SplashMtn said. :)

We currently have 8 ( :earseek: ), which is really 2 too many. We're still fostering Kit and Kat, though. Can't place them until they're both fixed, and Kit isn't big enough yet. Kat was neutered two weeks ago.

Anyway, back to the OP, it really depends on the household and individual cats.

:goodvibes Oh....my babies. :guilty: I was wondering about them. :grouphug:

We had 5 in 1500 sf until May this year. We now have 4.

As long as you can care for them, and your house doesn't smell like a zoo....no big deal.

Some think one is too many and some think 10 aren't enough! Different strokes for different folks. Only you know the answer. I have 3 rescues and couldn't imagine life without them. If I had a bigger house, I could probably accommodate a few more ;) . As long as the cats, and the owners, are comfortable, the answer could be any number. If extended family thinks you're nuts, just smile and say "Lucky you don't have to live here then isn't it!" :goodvibes

It depends. My answer is 'as many as you can appropriately care for'. I have clients who have ten, but they are well cared for and spotless. I have other clients who have three or four, yet they are covered with fleas and other parasites.

They're doing great, Splash! I need to get and upload recent pictures of them. :) Kit has developed this cute little white locket on her chin, so she's not solid red any more.

OP -- Was it Basil?

We have three! I think we would do okay with maybe one more, not looking for one though. I think 4 would be our limit though. I want to be able to give them all the attention they deserve.

Well, we have 3! We also have a hamster, 3 cockatiels and 9 parakeets. So we have 16 pets in all which is a bit nuts, but it works out ok for us.

All my cats are indoors and are spotless. My youngest can stand on her hind legs ... I'll post a picture if I can figure it out.

I only have one cat, but I don't consider 4 too many. I'd love to get another, but my mom just won't budge.

Now someone I know, on the other hand, has (jeez, I'm not even sure anymore) 12+ cats in a 1 bedroom apartment. THAT is a bit too much. There's nowhere to go to escape the cats! Plus, they aren't all that well-behaved and need way too many litter boxes for that little place!

As long as they are all well cared for and have room to play, be clean and happy, I'd say you don't have too many cats.

Got to answer the Disney character question! Basil is the name of the Great Mouse Detective! :) A rather unknown Disney movie from the 1980's.

Back to your regularly scheduled thread ....

My sister has 4 cats in a one bedroom apartment, and it is a lot for that small space, but the cats are well loved and taken care of. Two cats were rescued from very bleak futures. They manange OK. :)

Yes, 'as many as you can appropriately care for'...and also afford. :teeth:

We have 2 and I am hoping to rescue 2 more.

I absolutely cringe when I walk into a house and a cat comes out of every corner of the house, a big EW. I have this thing about cats, they're just too quiet and sneaky for my taste.

Now ask me about dogs, cmon ask. :) We have two labs, a yellow and black that we love.

Sorry, you asked. Cats, a big no. Dogs :cloud9:
