How Long for IRS to cash a check?

We had to paper file our taxes this year because someone fraudulently filed using our SS numbers.

We owed, as we always seem to, and this year, I paid using a check. Usually we pay online with our credit card just for the convenience and knowing it's DONE.

I sent our return certified mail on April 15th and USPS shows that the package is "in transit" with an expected delivery date of April 18th. Since today is April 24th, that's not especially helpful.

I was hoping the check would clear and we would know that our return actually got there.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Yes we did this. Ours was sent the Monday before yours and was cashed just this past Thursday I believe. Hope that helps!

Thank you! Hopefully they will cash it soon and I will know they got our tax return.

I sent mine in on 4/14 and the IRS cashed my check 4/19. I sent my state tax in on the same day and MD still hasn't cashed my check. I couldn't believe how fast the IRS was!

Normally the IRS cashes tax payment checks quickly. Often the checks are submitted to the bank for depositing on the same day they are received..

I was told by an IRS agent that the checks are held for three days before depositing them.
Upon our accountants advice I always send the taxes certified mail/return receipt then you get a postcard back and you know it was received. The longest it took for a check to clear was 20 days...mailed from the lake Buena Vista post office (don't know if that is still there) in 2000.

I sent it certified but it still shows in transit via the usps website. Maybe tomorrow...

So I just signed up for text alerts so I will know when the USPS delivers it. It appears it's in the correct state so that is promising.

The check has been cashed and the USPS still shows the package as "in transit". So much for certified mail.
