How long do we wait to take dog into vet - diareah issue.

I agree blood is the real deal breaker. Our dog had an infection called campilobacteria (sp) where the poos were runny & foul with blood. He also vomited blood.

It meant an overnight hospital stay on a drip, $$$$ then a week of chicken rice only fed 1 small spoon every 30 mins

The big test is to see how moist thier gums are (dehydration) and if they have nice pink gums or if the colour is slow to return to the gums after pressing them.

Whatever you do DO NOT give him yogurt.........................:scared1:

Dairy is bad bad bad for dogs.....you will make it worse. Boiled chicken and rice ONLY.

My dogs get yogurt occasionally, as well as cheese as an occasional treat. Where did you hear that dairy is bad for dogs?

Blood is a deal breaker. Bring a sample if you can. Good luck.

Absolutely! Do bring a small sample, it would be very helpful.

Please keep us posted. Hope your dog is OK.

I would put a call in to your Vet. I would not feed the dog any food except water for 24 hours to give the digestive system a rest. After that some rice, chicken would be great in small meals frequently. No seasoning and rinse the fat. If your dogs behavior is not the norm I would see the vet sooner rather than later. Plain natural yogurt is excellent for dogs in moderation. I would not give it to the dog when they are having digestive issues. Some use hamburger instead of chicken, either is fine.

Hope your pooch feels better quickly! :)

Good advice.

I could not get in until 2:40 today so I will be taking him then. I will bring a sample with me. I will have to be very careful collecting it though, I am pregnant and don't want to catch something if he has a virus or something.

I've never heard that either. I've told the vet that whenever he is put on antibiotics I give it (yogurt) to him. Antibiotics can mess with their intestines (just like humans) and the yogurt keeps it normal.

Good luck on the pup. Hopefully they don't tag you on the emergency visit along with the office call. They got us for $40 last time.

Use a plastic spoon and cup for collection - preferably one with a cover. As soon as you get the whole thing, stick it in an open ziploc bag. Have lysol wipes with you - one sticking up and ready - and wipe your hands as soon as you're done. To finish up, zip the bag after your hands are clean (so no germs are the outside) and place the clean ziploc bag in a supermarket type bag, then wipe again and wash when you go in the house. That ought to be pretty safe.

I hope your doggie is OK! I'm glad that you were able to have him seen today.

I have a dog with a sensitive stomach, she will get the poops once in awhile. The best thing I have learned is right away do not feed for 24 hours just water. After that white rice and boiled chicken, after a couple of days start mixing it with the dogs kibble. It usually works like a charm if not then its metranitizol (sp) meds from vet.

We just went through this with our new puppy. He was having the poos and not feeling well. I took him to the vet on Mon and she gave him antibiotics/nausea shots, he started feeling a little better and then got worse 3 days later. Ended up taking him back - he was so sick & we almost lost him. After 5 days at the vets on IV's and constant care he finally got to come home. He is better now, but the vet seemed to think he got a batch of contaminated puppy food. She said she had 5 other dogs in with the same symptoms and one was unconcious. 2 days after we took him home she said she received a fax that there was some contaimation of grains reported in Maryland. Vet said that when the grains don't pass for human consumption it is just dumped in dog food.

Hoping your dog is doing better. Keep us updated.

From our experience, no food but water for the next day or two. If your dog is really off, take him/her to the vet before Friday.

Well we are back from the Dr. and Hershey has Colitis. She gave me some anti-diarreah medication and some bland food that he needs to eat for the next week. She said that it should clear up in about 3 days or so. Glad it was not anything worse!

Thanks for all your advice!
