to feel comfortable in a new job?

I started a part-time job working for a very busy local realtor shortly after the year started. Her daughter trained me for maybe 12 hours over the course of several evenings. I have sort-of directions written out in a binder (but the daughter upgraded their version of Office from 2003 to '07, and that made a lot of the directions obsolete). There's SO much to learn here! I'm an intelligent person, but here it is 2 months later and I still feel SWAMPED. I must say that in the last week or so I'm feeling a little more in control -- partly because I got the days and hours under control -- my boss wanted to just be able to call me in when she needed me, rather than have set days and hours, and I can't live like that. It doesn't help that I have other major stresses at home that I need to deal with, but I don't know how long I should expect to feel like I have no idea what I'm doing! My boss is a very nice person, but she's SO busy that it's hard to get her attention to have questions answered, and then I feel like I've done something wrong when I didn't know what to do in the first place.

Any new job or re-assignment that I've ever had, took me a minimum of 3 months to reach a point where I started to feel comfortable, and even then it was probably another 6-9 months before I felt like I was completely comfortable. It may take even longer if you are working in a field that you were not previously knowledgeable about...like real estate.

Best of luck to you!

I'd have to say it took two or three months to be comfortable in my current job. It was a big change from my old job and it took a while to get the hang of things. It didn't help that I started right at the beginning of our busy season either.

I was with my first employer for 12 years, took me about a year to feel comfortable with the second employer. I was with my second employer for 16 years, took me about a year and a half to feel comfortable with my third employer. But a large part of that was because I was "temporary" for my first 13 months, no guaranteed hours, and several times was given notice that in a few weeks they would no longer have money to keep me on. Although until I became permanent I always had at least 40 hours work a week, and was the first one they offered overtime to. It just wasn't a sure thing.

I'm in a new job too... my issue is that I work from home. They flew me in for training for two weeks (first week had nothing to do with my job). It is really hard to be trained via webinars, etc... but it is an AWESOME opportunity to get to work from home and make more then I ever have. I am hoping that they will bring me back to the office for some more training in person... only time will tell.

Good luck in your new job!

With my last move it took a year before I was really comfortable. But I am reminded every day that I am still the new girl, and that there is still a lot to learn.
