How late do you think a 17 year old boy should be able to stay out?

I have a 17/yo DS, (he'll be a senior next year) and I was wondering how late do you think is reasonable for him to be able to stay out at night....

on weeknights?

on weekends?

He is a pretty good kid and really hasn't given us any trouble so far, so I want to be fair.

I say 12 on weekends and 10 on school nights..or weekdays!

Home on school nights,12 on weekends. Any later than that is too late!!

I never had a set curfew in HS...my parents trusted me, I was an Honor Student and all that (not that it means you won't get in trouble!)...I was usually home by 1 at that age.

::yes:: There's an old saying aroung here..."nothing good happens after midnight.." There may be some truth to that, especially if you are still a minor.:wave2:

I would say midnight on weekends and during the summer. 10pm on school nights.

9 pm on school nights. 12 on fri and sat. But that said, I want to know WHERE they are. I agree, there is nothing to do after that time that can't be done before.

School nights, not really unless there is a specific function or event they are going to. Homework must be done first. Weekends, no limit. No drinking and driving and don't get in the car with anyone that has, call us first that's why you have a cell phone. No drugs. and let us know where you are going to be.

9 on school nights and 11 on weekends / summer, but I'd want to know where he is and what he's doing. I'd also be agreeable if he called and asked for an extension on a case by case basis, as long as his grades are good and he's doing his chores around the house.

Home during school and work in the summer. I was allowed out till 11pm as long as my parents knew where I was during the summer. If it was a special thing I could stay long, like a concert or something like that.

I use to have a curfew of 1 am on weekends but was usually home early because all of my friends had curfews at 12am. On weeknights i got to use my best judgment. I worked a couple nights a week and closed at 10p.m. So if there were people still in there i couldn't close until they left. My parents were pretty layed back ofcourse I was the youngest of 5! I don't know if i can be that layed back w/ my kids though:(

My sons always told me that they were the only one of their friends who had a curfew - it must not have bothered me - 'cause they did! Midnight on weekends - they didn't go out on school nights except for school functions. During the summer - the curfew remained at midnight, unless we arranged ahead of time for an extension. I got many phone calls at 11:58, with the statement that they were dropping off friends & be a few minutes late.

I think 10 on weekdays/12 on weekends sounds good.

really - what IS there for someone under 21 to do past midnight?

I had a curfew of midnight on the weekends (unless I was working - then I wouldn't get home until 3am sometimes ???)

finally - being 21 I STILL had a midnight curfew...it sucked...finally had to convince my parents that I was smart enough to 'make it to last call' at the bar. heheheh

Most communities around here have curfews where young people 16 and under can't be out after 10:00 pm. For 17, I have to agree with the majority here, 10 for weeknights and 12 for weekends. That is, of course, unless their job keeps them out later. Our DS had a summer job that went from 5PM-1 AM when he was 17.

I think it also depends onthe function. For exampe...when I went to prom, I came home at 10am the next morning. My mom didnt care at all!

But around here we have midnight bowling where from 10-midnight you pay a cover charge and you get unlimited amount. I went with a bunch of girls and my mom I guess expected me home by 12:30-1am.

Well, I came in at 2:30..and she was pissed! Long and short I was out chasing a bunch of really hot guys that we had met up with at the alley! There were 7 of us and 7 of them..we could not stop laughing!LOL!

I told my mom that I had car trouble and I was nervous to leave the car and try to walk to find a phone! :p

Wow, I cannot get over the number of people here who allow their kids out on school nights. And until 10:00 p.m.? Our high schools start here at 7:20 a.m. with most students having to meet the bus by 6:45. In the best of circumstances, that might allow for 7 hours of sleep. I thought there was a study done saying that teenagers required a huge amout of sleep (roughly 10 hours) and that school systems should encourage later start times for high schools.

At any rate, I was never allowed out on school nights unless it was a special function/activity. What would they be doing anyway except hanging somewhere?

So, no nights out on school nights and home by midnight on weekends.

I don't want to get into this one (another of the major differences between my mom and my dad), but consider this: assuming your DS is going away to college, in one year's time he will have no curfews or limits whatsoever. (Not to mention ready availability of alcohol.) It's probably a good idea (understatement) to allow him to test the waters in a safe environment this year.
