How inexpensive can you make a school lunch?

We use to allow our kids to eat school lunch 1x per week, the other days I would pack them. We would sit down and plan the month out towards the end of the previous month. I dont buy the individual packaged items unless they are on sale and I have coupons, other than that I use baggies or containers to put their items in. Here are some of the items my children liked over the years

hotdogs (I would cook them, place in bread and wrap in foil)
PBj
Turkey and cheese roll (DD liked just the meat and cheese no bread)
left over taco shells with cheese/meat/veggies/etc
pizza bites (buy big box, warm up and wrap in foil)
soup
salad (I put salad and dressing in seperate containers)
popcorn
rice krispies
granola bar
cookies
fresh fruit
yogurt
cottage cheese
if I did applesauce/mandrine orages, etc Ide use small plastic containers not indiv packaged.
I always tried to keep their lunch around $1-$1.50. School lunches are only $1.75, but my kids dont usually eat them well.

Our DD3 is a vegetarian, so Im sure Ill pack all of her lunches when she goes to school.
